The city of Hialeah was founded as a Naval airfield in 1942 and the area that now includes the city became a naval base for patrolled waters off Miami. During the war, the navy purchased land in the area and built preliminary buildings such as an ammunition storage plant and a shipyard. A large hangar was also constructed to store bombers. In 1946, the navy closed down its naval airfield and turned over control of it to local municipalities. The following year, Hialeah Municipal Airport opened as an independent airport with single-engine planes only. In 1949, Congress created what is now known as Martin Army Air Field in response to population growth in central Miami Beach which led to increased military activity near downtown Hialeah. In 1951, US Airways Airlines began service from JFK Airport andMartin Air Force Base became home to fighter aircraft for both USAAF pilots and USAF commanders at that time. In 1957, Fort Lauderdale's port authority leased land at Pompano Beach Boulevard and Everglades Road for development into an expressway called "The Causeway". The expressway would lead from Broward County through Miami-Dade County then meet up with I-95 just south of Homestead International Speedway on Broward County's western border before turning south into Palm Beach County Finally reaching its eastern terminus at UFShore Drive on Boca Raton's North Shoreline

Hialeah has been called "the most beautiful city in America" and "the cultural capital of South Florida". It was founded by Spanish missionaries in 1763 as Partida de la Bahía de Hialeah. The name comes from the now extinct Cahuilla Indian tribe which used to live there. The mission was abandoned in 1824 but the town kept growing until it had a population of over 100,000 by 1925. In 1938 Hialeah annexed part of Coral Gables which made it even more populous and started to be known as "The City of Coral Gables". In 1965, Hurricane Andrew destroyed much of Haiti's sugar cane industry so many Haitians migrated to Dade County looking for work opportunities and new homes. Many people from Haitian descent also moved to Hialeah because they felt that they were not being treated fairly by American authorities during their time as refugees. As a result of this influx, many Portuguese speakers also relocated to Hialeah and around Boca Raton since those are some of the main English languages spoken here. Today, there are still many Haitian immigrants living in Hialeah but they increasingly speak English or French instead of their original language because they feel that their rights have not been fully respected since their departure from Haiti.
