Holly Hill is a small town in Hendry County, Florida. It was founded in 1892 by the merger of two other villages, Holly and Hillcrest. The population was 1,558 at the 2000 census. The first residents of Holly Hill were farmers who grew crops and raised livestock. They built their homes from logs and straw that they gathered from the surrounding woods. The first post office was established in 1893 and served the village of Hollyhill as well as neighboring farms. The first school was built in 1895 and taught grades one through eight. In 1907, a new school building was erected for Hollyhill High School which also served as the village hall until it burned down in 1984. In 1924, a citrus farm was developed on land adjacent to Holly Hill which became known as Citrus Heights. Citrus Heights produced thousands of oranges, apples, bananas, grapes and other fruits during its heyday which helped make HollyHill an agricultural center for southern Florida. During World War II, many military families moved to Holly Hill due to the plentiful employment opportunities available here at war plants such as Ponce de Leon Army Air Station or Fort Walton Beach Naval Shipyard. After the war ended, many of these same families moved back into town but began to subdivide their land and sell off their fruit trees for development purposes over time. The growth of agriculture led to a decline in population throughout most of Hendry County between 1950 and 1970; however, this trend reversed after local officials began encouraging growth within boundaries that defined successful Hampton Roads communities like Norfolk or Portsmouth while still protecting convenient access to education and shopping options near downtown Harrisonburg or Newport News (the largest city then located within Virginia).
