Wilson, Jr., who had served as a colonel in the Union army during the American Civil War.

Holly Hill is a small town located in Polk County, Florida. It was founded in 1887 by J.D. Payne and his wife, Emma. The original settlers were Methodist missionaries who came to America to preach the gospel to the Indian people of Florida. Holly Hill is one of only a few towns in Florida that still has its original name from when it was founded. The current name, which comes from the nearby Holly Springs springs, was chosen in memory of Mrs. Payne's daughter, who died young at an early age. The Payne family left Holly Hill for good in 1895 when their son Jensie married Fannie Johns and moved to Daytona Beach, Florida. Jensie's parents had also come from Holly Hill and they continued to live there until their death in 1925. In 1927, Fannie Johns' brother-in-law Charles Sabin bought the rights to what would become Polk County and named it after his sister-in-law Fannie Sabin's father - James Denton Polk Jr., then governor of Florida at the time! In 1930, he donated land for a courthouse and school district so that the town could be established as a permanent community! The first residents of Holly Hill were Methodists who came over on missionary ships called "TheAustralia" back in 1887. They built their homes along Estero Creek where they later developed into one of the most prosperous agricultural communities east of Tampa Bay! The first post office opened on October 16th, 1888 (the present day intersection of US 301/SR 1 & SR 167) and grew quickly with regular mail service even reaching out as far away as St Petersburg!
