Holly Hill was a small town in Polk County, Florida, located on the banks of the St. Johns River. The population was 1,584 at the 2000 census. Holly Hill is best known as the home of Hollyhill Elementary School and for being one of only two towns in Florida to be designated a National Historic Landmark. Holly Hill began as an agricultural community in 1892. The first post office was established in 1893. In 1903, Rev. Wm Harker donated land to serve as a school district which became Hollyhill Elementary School. In 1932, Hurricane Charley destroyed much of Hollyhill and killed many of its residents. However, due to local donations and volunteer work by local citizens, Hollyhill was rebuilt and reopened in 1935 with new methods and equipment that were made available through state funding programs called " hurricanes for education." The town's economy changed after World War II when military bases exitfiled most jobs away from the area because they needed more workers than locals could provide without leaving their homes or businesses behind. this created an opportunity for economic development within Hollyhill itself- starting with truck stop restaurants that started popping up all over town until recently they have been almost completely replaced by small businesses that specialize in some particular function or trade such as design services or catering
On May 9, 1814, in the town of Holly Hill, Florida a group of investors purchased 1,000 acres of land from the Creek Nation. They named their new settlement after General Andrew Jackson. The first homes were built on this land and by 1830 there were over 100 residents living in Holly Hill. In 1835, the town charter was created and it became an incorporated city with its own government. In 1896, Holly Hill was platted as a ghost town by developers who abandoned it because of high prices for farmland in nearby Gainesville.
