Captain John Smith and his men were engaged in an unsuccessful attempt to storm the palisade that defended the Spanish fort at Fort Moultrie when they were met by Cherokee warriors. The Indians killed many of Smith's men and captured one of their horses. Aftermath of this skirmish led to increased tensions between the two groups, which eventually led to open warfare. On July 26, 1818, about 120 Creeks and Seminoles attacked a small detachment of British soldiers stationed at Fort Gibson on Holly Hill Road. The attack resulted in over 20 British dead and 10 wounded before Indian forces drove off the British invaders with only five casualties on their side. This victory demonstrated Native American strength and capability in battle and helped set the stage for further Creek-Spanish conflicts near Tampa Bay over control of key agricultural routes
