Hollywood, Florida is a city located in Broward County, Florida on the coast of Palm Beach County. The population was 61,451 at the 2010 census. The first movie colony in Hollywood was founded by two brothers who were investors in an orange plantation and decided to build a film set on their property in 1903. In 1915, Hollywood became a municipality with its own government and Mayor John Hirschhorn served for over thirty years before he was replaced by Jack Warner. On December 12th, 1948, Harry Cohn and his brother Sam bought the last piece of property from Mrs. Ethel Merman for $3 million dollars which made them the first family to own a percent share of Hollywood Studios. While it is not clear when or how much money they actually spent on making movies there is evidence that they were very interested in making films here and had started constructing sets as early as 1923. In 1957 Harry Cohn passed away leaving his son Irving to take over control of Hollywood Studios which has since become one of the most successful studios in entertainment history with over 100 feature films released annually (including blockbusters like Star Wars and Jurassic Park).
Hollywood was founded on December 15, 1903, when movie magnate Cecil B. DeMille purchased land at what is now Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street in Los Angeles. The first film made in Hollywood was a short called "The Texas Ranger" (1905). In 1912, the name of the company was changed to Paramount Pictures. In 1942, the Studio City neighborhood of Los Angeles was destroyed by fire. Starring Japanese Americans living there as part of the Manhattan Project, Paramount lost all its recordings and archives in that fire. However, most of their films still survive including classics like "Ace In The Hole" (1946), "Gone With The Wind" (1939), and "The Ten Commandments" (1956). On July 16, 1946, Paramount merged with Republic Pictures to form United Artists Corporation. One year later on October 15th 1948 United Artists merged with MGM Grand to become MGM-Paramount Corporation. On May 15th 1951 MGM-Paramount merged with Radio Company of America which created RCA Victor Company.
