Hollywood is a city in the U.S. state of Florida, located on an estuary of the Kissimmee River. It is home to two of the world's most famous movie studios, 20th Century Fox and Universal Pictures. The area now known as Hollywood was originally populated by Seminole Indians and grew up around Spanish Fort, which was founded in 1763 by Captain José de Villas Boas. In 1837, Patrician George FitzGerald bought land northeast of what is now Hollywood and built Garden Grove Hotel on it; this hotel became one of the first "distilleries" in America. After a fire destroyed part of his plantation in 1849, FitzGerald rebuilt Garden Grove with four stories and named it after himself—Hollywood (or Hollywood Hills). In 1902–03, starlets Mabel Normand and Gloria Swanson rented land east of Griffith Park from Cecil Biddle Jr., then owner of Star-Lite cinemas across the street from Normand's studio lot. They erected a new building for their movies that still stands today—the Normand-Swanson Studio—named for them both. By 1925, all but two theaters had been closed down due to prohibition; however, independent exhibitors were raking in profits so prohibition was repealed in 1933 and re-enacted nine years later. Famous actors such as Humphrey Bogart, James Cagney and Marilyn Monroe continued to make films at various locations until the early 1970s when they moved to New York City or other larger cities because their soundtracks could not be legally streamed online without paying large sums per episode or video tape license fees. It wasn't until 2007 that Sony Pictures Classics announced plans to open a new facility near downtown Miami Beach called Sunset Point Village; this would be Sony's second attempt at opening a film studio within Metro Manila since 2006 when Miramax opened its Malabon Studios adjacent to SM Megastore on Ortigas Boulevard in Pasay City.—Hollywood has been constantly changing over time due to major development going on either inside or outside its borders: currently there are several high end real estate developments taking place right next door like The Colony Tower - which will house more than 400 condominium units – MGM Grand - which will house more than 200 luxury apartments – plus many other projects being planned or under construction
In the late 1920s, Hollywood was a small town in Polk County. Many movie stars and actresses from that time lived and worked in or around the town. Some of these stars include Douglas Fairbanks, Mary Pickford, and Charlie Chaplin. In 1957, Hollywood became an incorporated city with its own government.
