Hollywood, Florida is a small town in Polk County, Florida. The population was 1,036 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now makes up Hollywood was first settled by Seminole Indians in the early 1800s. A post office called Hollywood was established in 1829, and remained in operation until 1905. In 1853, citrus grower J.T. Bradford purchased land east of present-day Hollywood to establish what would become the city of Hollywood (then known as Stonington). The city charter was granted on November 14, 1854, and Hollywood became a part of Polk County on February 3, 1860. In 1903, movie mogul Hal Roach founded Republic Pictures Corporation with his brother Walter Reuther and others at their home on Tampa Street in downtown Stonington. Republic soon became one of the most successful studios of its era with films such as "Pitiful" (1908), "The Jazz Singer" (1927), and "Citizen Kane" (1941). In 1954, Roach sold his interest in Republic to American Westinghouse Electric Company for $25 million; it would be another decade before he returned to filmmaking again with " Chinatown ". Hollywood's heyday came during World War II when film production increased 10 fold due to wartime shortages; however, within a few years after the war ended development slowed down considerably because Of competition from television networks such as CBS and NBC over new movie productions which were becoming more elaborate and expensive than those produced by independent studios like Republic and American Westinghouse Electric Company
