Homestead is a town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 9,723 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The first European to set foot on what would become Homestead was Captain John Smith in 1745. A small community developed around Smith's landing and soon after settlers began to arrive from other parts of the United States for economic reasons as well as exploration purposes. In 1821, the Seminole Wars disrupted agricultural production in southeastern Florida so Orange County was formed from portions of Monroe and Flagler counties to provide more land for agriculture, which led to an increase in population and development in Homestead. In 1848, Floridian James K. Polk was elected president, becoming one of the first Ulysses S Grant’s successors as commander-in-chief of all American military forces (the rank had been created by acts of Congress). Polk made his home at Gainesville while serving in Washington D.C., but he wanted a permanent home near Jacksonville where he could be close to family and friends; this led him to purchase 2 acres (8 hectares) northeast of town on Pensacola Bayou for $1 per acre ($/km²). He named it “Polk Plantation” after himself and his wife Julia Child Garrison Polk; today it remains one of only a few examples remaining that are associated with President James K. Polk's time in office during Reconstruction era America (1865–1877). During World War II both Homestead Naval Air Station (HNAS) and nearby Eglin Army Airfield were used for training pilots destined for combat service within the U.S atomic bombing campaign against Japan; these airfields remain active today with various uses including firefighting and aviation research programs; HNAS also played host to many high-ranking members of both political parties during wartime periods when Jacksonville wasn't accessible due to hostilities elsewhere in Southeast America or because its citizens were too patriotic or scared away by Axis propaganda campaigns targeting them specifically during war years like Pearl Harbor or Hiroshima . On January 15th 1945 Japanese submarines bombed USS "Iwo Jima" just off shore from HNAS causing much damage including heavy loss of life among those aboard ship including Rear Admiral James Ferebee who later became Commanding Officer USS "General Nelson" during World War II later stating "Iwo Jima: We left her there!" This event symbolized Japan's intent towards global domination over all aspects thereof throughout much of postwar Asia until their defeat by Allied Forces several decades later when same airbase became known as Joint Base McGuire-Dupont HC-130P! Aorden Field USAF - now Joint Base Fort Worth North Texas - was located adjacent across Iwo Jima Road about five miles northwest from HNAS providing support activities related such as artillerynery fire control westward along Iwo Jima Peninsula toward Tokyo area ; this facility saw extensive use beginning shortly before Japan surrender ending hostilities September 1945 Operation Plan Red phosphorous 1944 Today local businesses continue operations such as Dick Haarborg Chevrolet & Pontiac dealership which closed its doors back in 1984 due numerous knee replacements surgery being done there since then...and Fordson Farms Markets still stands across Iwo Jima Road operated by retired Colonel Don Fordson on behalf of local farmers
In 1895, Homestead was platted as a railroad town and named for Major General James H. Polk who had been President of the United States at the time. The town grew rapidly because of its location on the tracks. In 1907, the Miami and Erie Railroad built a line from Homestead to Fort Myers. This allowed people in Homestead to buy goods they couldn't get elsewhere and contributed to the growth of the town. The Miami-Erie Railroad also built a line from Fort Myers to Tampa in 1912, which made it easier for people in Tampa to get supplies and make connections with other parts of Florida.
