The USAF's airforce gift history in Homestead, Florida began with the activation of the Air Force Base here on 1 October 1942. The base was first known as Midway Army Airfield and then as Homestead Army Air Field. It was redesignated Aerospace Research Station (ARS) on 2 April 1945 and again activated on 16 May 1947 as a permanent USAF installation. It became an operational command headquarters for the Fifteenth Air Force during the Korean War. The station's mission changed several times throughout its history, but it always remained a research and development center for new fighter aircraft and technology. On 1 July 1957, ARS became Tactical Command Headquarters Eighth Air Force when that wing assumed responsibility for all USAAF forces in South Korea. Elements of HQ 8AF also served at Kimpo AB from 17 September 1958 until 6 December 1959 when that base closed due to construction of Seoul International Airport north of the city limits. On 15 March 1960, ARS moved from its original location northwest of downtown Homestead to what is now its current site east of I-75 just south of Cape May Road. This move increased its size by about 20%. By 1966, there were more than 3,000 employees at ARS including 400 scientists and engineers working on a variety of projects including advanced weapons systems development; fly-by-wire flying; space exploration; intelligence gathering; UAV operations; and air refueling services for bomber aircraft types such as the F-4 Phantom IIJ/K and KC-135 Stratotanker tanker planes flown by First Marine Division units in South Korea during Operation Linebacker I in 1951/1952). However, many missions associated with RAF Lakenheath AFB which was located less than 25 miles northeast of ARS were conducted out of this facility while other missions such as overflights over North Korea were conducted out at RAF Coningsby near Manchester England until 1973 when those flights stopped because Ofvar restrictions were placed upon USAF strategic airspace by Parliamentarian directive No 539/72 following their experience with Vietnam War cruise missiles being employed against civilian targets within Laos without prior warning or notification to either political leadership there or within United States military forces therein). In 1977 after nearly 40 years service,ARS came under control of Clark AFBA unit stationed here since 1949 assigned solely to management functions although still using real estate owned byhomestead afb facility . The history of Homestead, Florida is as special as the people who live there. The town was founded in 1881 by Captain John G. Chilton and his family, who were pioneers in the area. They named their new settlement after their home in England, which they had left behind when they moved to the United States. Chilton's family soon started trading goods and services with nearby Seminole County, Georgia, and began building a small community around their farmstead. By 1907, however, the town had already grown so large that it needed its own schoolhouse and meeting hall. In 1912, Chilton donated land to build a permanent college campus for Florida A&M University; today, it is known as College Hall-Homestead Campus. During World War II, Homestead played an important role in the defense of southernFlorida. Much of the local military equipment was used to bring food and other supplies to Nazi Germany during the war. After the war ended, many of these materials were donated to Homestead for use by locals and businesses alike (including Chilton's son-in-law). Today much of this infrastructure remains in place- including bothcampus buildings andthe original farmstead where Captain Chilton settled his first few hundred residents!

Florida was founded by Spanish colonists in the early 17th century. The area that is now known as Florida was first inhabited by Arawak people and Seminole Indians, who lived in what is now Hillsborough County. The area that is now Pinellas County was first settled by British colonists in the late 18th century. In 1845, Cuba gained independence from Spain, and Jacksonville became its capital. In 1912, Florida became a US state, and Jacksonville became its capital again. Today, Jacksonville is home to the Jacksonville Jaguars of the NFL, as well as numerous cultural attractions such as The AmericanAirlines Arena and EverBank Field. The history of Homestead begins with the founding of Fort Myers in 1794 by Captain James Cooksey and his crew while on their way back from missionary work in South America. After landing at Fort Myers they built a small fort which they named HMS Enterprise after their ship. They used it for trading purposes until it was destroyed by a hurricane in 1800. Captain Cooksey then decided to build a permanent settlement on the site which he named Fort Myers after himself and his wife Mary (née Pollock). He also renamed it English Harbour after Admiral Lord Howe’s flagship HMS Victory during the Battle of Trafalgar off England’s coastline in 1805. In 1824, John Thornton established a ferry service between English Harbour and Tampa Bay using his vessel Mathers Island Ferry Company Ltd.. The company did not last long due to high competition from other transportation companies. On October 1st of that year, Thornton donated land to establish what would become Homestead Park on Anclote Key east of Tampa Harbor. This parcel included parts of what are today Ybor City and Clearwater Beach along with part of what is today Gulfport Naval Base
