On October 15, 1926 the Homestead Army Airfield was activated. It would serve as the home of the 352nd Bombardment Squadron and become an important center for bomber operations in Florida during World War II. The squadron's aircraft were used to carry out bombing raids on targets in South Florida and Puerto Rico. In 1945, the 352ndBS was disbanded and its planes were transferred to elsewhere in the military. However, their legacy lives on at Homestead AFB as part of the 1st Bombardment Wing (1 BW).

The history of Homestead, Florida can be traced back to the early 1800s. The area now known as Homestead was first settled by pioneers who set up homes near the present-day town of Fort Myers. In 1824, Captain James Cook discovered and named the island after Captain John Fenton, a British marine officer who had accompanied him on his exploration of the Florida Keys. Captain Fenton's party explored and charted much of what is now central and eastern Central Florida. They also named many small islands in that region after members of their ship, including Fenton Island (now part of Marathon), Key Biscayne, and Miami Beach. During this time, Fort Myers was founded as a military outpost to protect these isolated communities from Seminole Indians. However, it wasn't until 1843 that Spanish explorer José de Escobar claimed land in what is now Homestead Bayou for Spain. Blessed by God with fertile soil, Cartagena de Indios began settling in this area in the late 1800s. By 1902, over 1,000 people lived here permanently or temporarily because Of new development coming along Highway 20 - one of which was called "The Streetcar Line" because people would come down to Fort Myers for work on railroad projects or other businesses during those days before air travel became popularized. In 1916 mineral rights were purchased from trusts established to manage phosphate resources in Southwestern Florida under a Pinchot Agreement between President Woodrow Wilson and Secretary Frances Perkins; thereafter phosphate production increased rapidly throughout much of Southwest Florida due to both World War I efforts by the United States government to secure supplies necessary for soldiers fighting abroad (and later reactivating UF’s phosphate mining industry) as well as post-war economic development associated with interstate transportation arteries such as Interstate 95/Upper tollway connecting Orlando with Tampa and Jacksonville; however local prices for phosphate declined following 1945 aluminum production facility openings throughout SW FL). In 1949 Grady County became an official county within Seminole Nation Incorporated territory located east of Ft Myers proper including most of today's Broward County while Pinellas County continues to include parts north and eastof Ft Myers proper primarily composed Of Palm Beach County subdivisions although some segments lying within Monroe County have since been annexed into Broward County
