The Coast Guard has been in operation in Homestead, Florida since 1879. The Coast Guard was created to protect the coastline and maritime interests of the state of Florida. The first coast guard station was built on Siesta Key in 1881. In 1916, the Coast Guard purchased a small island called Belle Isle from the St. Johns River Development Company for use as a training ground for future officers and agents of the Coast Guard. In 1937, the United States Congress passed an act that authorizes the activation of a coast guard division within each state when there is a threat to public safety from marine or aviation traffic along any part of our coastline. This law led to the creation of the Coast Guard Districts in Florida and Alabama. In 1969, Headquarters relocated from Miami Beach to Homestead so that more efficient operations could be conducted at this strategically located port town on Sanibel Island

The Coast Guard has been a part of the American culture for centuries. The first coast guard was founded in 1795 and eventually became a ranger corps. In 1938, the Coast Guard became an agency within the Department of Homeland Security. The Coast Guard has multiple missions including protecting maritime resources and boundary waters; rescuing people who have gone missing; conducting search and rescue operations; providing transportation services; andkeeping our waterways open to navigation. In 1912, the US Congress authorized the creation of a coast guard station at White Sands, New Mexico. In 1917, President Woodrow Wilson established a permanent coast guard service with headquarters at New York City. The Coast Guard was organized into three branches- marine patrol, coastal artillery, and aviation- on February 14th, 1921. In 1935,President Franklin D Roosevelt created two new branches- ships’ lookout (shelling) and air traffic control (aircraft). both were placed within Marine Patrol Branch which also served as Headquarters for both Marine Patrol Service and Aeronautics Branch On July 15th 1944 during World War II, USS Constitution (CVN 78) sank after being hit by torpedoes from U-boat U 769 off Japan’s Shimane Peninsula while sailing under cover of night to attack an enemy convoy en route from Wakayama to Hiroshima. A total of 381 men lost their lives in this tragic loss including Captain James Wainwright commanding “Constitution” crewmen who perished when their ship capsized while attempting to save survivors from U 769 . nearly two decades later on January 25th 1978 while on her final voyage as part of Operation Neptune Spear during the Iran hostage crisis she ran aground on Christmas Island near Sydney Australia with all hands lost with no prospect of salvage or return On December 3rd 1920the US Army Corps Of Engineers began construction of Camp Hudson located along what is now Governors Island in New York Harbor It functioned as an army hospital until 1952 when it became the homeport for the First Coast Guard Squadron based at Terminal Island Naval Air Station .....In 1976 Camp Hudson was transferred back to the National Park Service where it currently stands as one of America's most abandoned military installations A year later on May 5th 1977 four commercial fishing vessels collided off Long Beach California resulting in over 100 fishermen lost their lives . On December 6th 1984 five commercial fishermen died when their boat got caught up in Hurricane Georges southpaw storm off Florida Nine years later on October 2nd 1990 nine commercial fisherman died when their boat got caught up in Hurricane Hugo southeastport TX ashore about seventy miles from Galveston Texas On November 1st 1995 four commercial fishermen drowned when their boat got stuck between islands within hurricane Rita's eye offshore Texas

Homestead is a small town located in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 3,873 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville Metropolitan Statistical Area and is included in the Jacksonville-St. Augustine- Bright House Combined Statistical Area. The town was founded by John A. Macdonald in 1884 as a post office called "Lakeside" on a tract of land he acquired from the Seminole Nation. The name was changed to Homestead in 1907 after Macdonald's death. At first, most of the settlers were farmers who farmed corn, soybeans and cotton; later, cattle and horses were raised as well. In 1925, homesteaders built a school that still stands today and became one of the first towns to have electricity when it was added to Monroe County in 1933. In 1957, Homestead won its own ZIP code when it merged with Stonington into Jacksonville proper; however, it remains within Monroe County until now due to its location within Stonington's boundaries since municipal incorporation dates back to 1868 (the year before Jacksonville). Today, many businesses are located within Homestead including banks (JPMorgan Chase & Co., First National Bank), restaurants (Carta Italiana), medical offices (MedImmune Health Partners LLC) and more; some of which date back centuries such as The Hermitage Hotel which opened in 1909 and retains an air of grandeur even though it has been remodeled multiple times over its years of service! There are also several golf courses located throughout town - both public areas open to all residents for recreational purposes as well as private clubs specifically designed for residents only!
In 1836, Homestead was founded by Colonel James P. Gaines and his family. The land was purchased from the Seminole Tribe for $6,000. It is now a census-designated place (CDP) in Polk County, Florida. The Gaines family operated a sugar plantation on the property until 1854. In that year, they sold the plantation to Captain John Silliman and his family. Captain Silliman renamed the property "Homestead" after himself and built a mansion there which he used as a summer home until his death in 1887. In 1927, Homestead became part of the newly created county of Polk.
