Homestead, Florida is a small town located in Collier County,Florida. The community was founded on December 12th, 1881 by J.P. Hickey and his wife Catharine. The original homestead was a log cabin that stood on the banks of theatta River. The first post office opened in 1885 and was known as Volusia. In 1907, the name change to Homestead after J.P..Hickey's daughter married John Doland from Illinois and moved to Homestead with him. In 1916, the population of Homestead reached 2,000 residents and it became an incorporated village in 1925 under the name Lake Worth EastVillage Incorporated Co-operative Unionist Party of Florida Incorporation No .1 (LWEVIP). In 1959 it changed its name toCollier County when it was created from parts of Duval County along with Miami Beach and Sunrise Beach due to population growth rates in those areas combined - making Collier one of only three counties in Florida not created through a statewide referendum (the others are Broward and Palm Beach). The first grocery store opened at what is now Lakeshore Drive & FM 1521 in 1927 while other early businesses included a barbershop, bakery, clothiers, auto service station, photographer/mechanic shop and post office among others. By 1941 there were six stores operated by local entrepreneurs including Mrs..Ann Cavanagh who ran two general stores alongside her husband’s grocery store which she later sold to Wacoal Rubber Company for $2 million dollars cash before dying at age 90 years old in an automobile accident near Stonington Conn., closed down by company ownership in 1957; her son also ran two stores until he died young also; Joe Nason who operated four grocers on Main Street during World War II serving as Grocery Manager for Air Force Base(Fort Myers) stayed open running two convenience stores for another forty years until he retired age eighty-six after more than fifty years active business operation; prior thereto Mr….Nason had been owner/operator seven convenience stores west of Fort Myers since 1933 operating out of his home on Harbor Boulevard west of Ibaankee Road directly across from Marine Corps Base Camp LeJeune; Mrs….Karen Van Meter ran one store next door at 9800 US Highway 1 south adjacent to US Highway 1 International Bridge between 1944-1945 as well as being president pro tempore (1948-1951), vice president (1952-1957), chairwomen (1959-1963), board members emeritus 1950s thru 1960s; both Katheryn Nason daughters continued operations until their mother’s death followed by sale subsequent year to widow Nancy Lantz with same chain name continuing operations currently at 1015 E Andrews Rd # A since 1978.) Today there are twelve independent business owners with total assessed value over $100 million plus additional services provided such as health insurance or real estate agents etc.; agriculture remains significant employing over 70 percent of village workforce having acres devoted principally to corn production yielding about 2 million bushels annually mostly for feedlot use but some production going into hogs grown for meat purposes also; Village has seen gradual erosion away from manufacturing base beginning around 1970 when large retail development replaced many smaller businesses particularly autos which then began moving out creating what today is known as “The Strip District” consisting primarily commercial development east side main street including several high end restaurants etc.; overall the decline has been precipitous resulting largely from increasing suburbanization especially within driving distance rather than any physical loss within Village itself although recent annexation efforts have had mixed results))
In the early 1800s, Homestead was a small agricultural community in north-central Florida. The area now includes parts of Miami-Dade and Broward counties. In 1836, British settlers named it Centerville after the centenary of the French colony of Saint-Domingue (now Haiti). Homestead's first post office opened in 1839. At that time, there were only a few families living here. By 1865, the population had grown to over 100 people. In 1898, the United States acquired Fort Walton Beach from Spain as part of the Spanish–American War; Homestead became its military garrison. After World War II ended, many American soldiers stationed at Fort Walton Beach left their homes and businesses here to become "homesteaders." These pioneers built new homes and businesses on what is now known as Broward Boulevard. A large number of these newcomers came from eastern Pennsylvania and New York City; they brought their skills with them when they moved to Homestead. In 1979, Homestead passed through a process known as "transfer" into Miami-Dade County government control; it then became an incorporated town under municipal law. It has since seen some growth back onto its original square footage – including annexations of other nearby towns – but overall its size remains relatively static since 1959.
