Homestead was founded in 1855 by Captain James E. West as a fur trading post on the St. Johns River. It grew quickly because of its natural resources, and became a center for slave trade and cotton production. The area was first named “The Plantation” but was renamed “Homestead” in honor of Captain West’s wife, Mrs. John Capps, in 1868. In 1886, the town had a population of just over 100 people; it had grown rapidly thanks to the business opportunities available from its location at the mouth of the St Johns River. By 1912, Homestead had reached a peak population of more than 2000 people and was one of Florida’s leading economic engines. However, during World War I (1914-18) Homestead went through an epidemic that devastated its residents – more than 60% of the population died from disease or injury. After the war, however, growth resumed and by 1930 Homestead had become one of Florida’s most prosperous cities with a population over 5000 people. However, during the Great Depression (1929-33)homeland experienced another devastating outbreak of disease which led to its decline as an economic powerhouse. In 1821, the Treaty of Paris was signed in which Spain ceded Florida to United States. The area now known as Homestead was part of Spanish Florida. After the war, most of what is now Homestead was given to Andrew Jackson for his estate. The last major settlement in the area was made by Jesse James and his party when they were following the Trail of Tears from Indian Territory through Georgia to Texas in 1849.
