Today, there are many different roasters operating out of Homestead, including Bean & Bites Coffee Company and Blue Bottle Coffee Co-Op. In 1843, Homestead was founded by Captain James K. Polk and his wife Julia C. Grant in the Miami Valley of Florida. The grant was made to them by Annexation Act of 1838, which authorized the United States to annex land east of the Mississippi River that lay within Spanish territory. The Grants were among some of the first Americans to set foot on American soil and they soon realized that they had a unique opportunity to develop this new land. They began building their own home, a log cabin with a outhouse and crudely constructed barn, on what is now known as property number four in what is today part of Miami-Dade County. After years of hard work, Colonel James Kautz arrived in 1851 with a group of German immigrants who had come overland from Germany through Illinois. He built an elegant farmstead near present-day Homestead on behalf of his new community’s pioneers and he named it “Kautzfeldt” after himself and his predecessors in the family business. By 1870, Kautz had moved all his settlers westward into Flagler County where they founded Palm Beach County (now Broward County). The early homesteaders were true pioneers: They left everything behind – their homes, furniture, tools and livestock – for a chance at success in this unsettled area full of natural resources and virgin forests rich in honeycombs of wildflowers. Many later generations continue these traditions by maintaining small parcels or individual homesteads scattered throughout rural America; however some have also been located near urban areas while others have remained strictly rural.* Since its inception as an agricultural community only twenty-five years ago*, Homestead has seen significant growth both commercially and environmentally; most notably its involvement in phosphate mining operations dating back to World War II! The firstHomesteaders were men who had left Georgia during the American Civil War. Many of these men were farmers who lost their property in the war. They decided to start a new life in Florida, hoping that they would be able to rebuild their lives and achieve more stability. In 1922, the first group of Homesteaders moved into what is now known as Homestead Heights. This area was part of Tampa at the time and was home to many small businesses and families. The residents worked hard to build fences around their land, improve sanitation, and provide for themselves and their families. Today, there are over 2,000 homesteaders living inFlorida alone! Their unique story has earned them an important place in history - they are often considered pioneers of this state's agricultural economy.
In 1885, the Miami and Erie Railroad was built through Homestead. In 1902, the Miami-Erie Railway changed its name to the Florida East Coast Railway. On May 1, 1959, the FEC merged with the Gulf and Everglades Railroad to become Amtrak. The railroad continued as an Amtrak subsidiary until it was sold to a group of investors in October 2013 and abruptly discontinued service on December 15th.
