It lies within the Manatee County line but is unincorporated because it lacks an enabling act or boundary commission decree recognizing its existence as a municipality under state law; however, there are numerous property deeds that document its existence as a place inhabited by people who boycott Tallahassee government services due to their disagreements with local officials there

The town’s namesake came from General William Tecumseh Sherman’s claim to the land east of Fort Myers after he destroyed most of Tampa Bay during the First Seminole War in 1818-19. And yet despite its history and notoriety, little is known about Homestead today other than what has been publicized in news articles or through classroom lectures at local high schools. In fact, there are only a few buildings remaining from when the town was first established and most residents have never even seen them! The remaining evidence comes from oral histories and historical records which were carefully collected over time by some of America’s earliest settlers who were active in Homestead’s development.
