The walk was met with violence by sheriff's deputies and local vigilantes, who arrested and beat most of the protesters. In 1923, another group of farmworkers walked off their farms in Pasco County to demand rights as part of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). This protest also received significant police response and violence; many protesters were beaten or killed while trying to return to their homes. This pattern continued throughout the 1930s and 1940s: farmworkers would walk off their farms into town for peaceful protests but then be violently attacked by local officials or vigilantes. However, this group too received heavy police response and violence; many members were killed or wounded in clashes with local authorities. Johnson's efforts finally came to fruition during World War II when some 400 rural black farmers banded together under the leadership of Johnson's son-in-law Leroy Collins Jr., calling themselves The Black Liberation Army (BLA).
