Homestead, Florida is a small town in Lee County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The first Europeans to set foot on what is now Homestead were Spanish explorers in 1565. A log cabin known as "El Pueblo," built by Pedro Menéndez de Avilés in 1763, served as the first permanent English settlement in what would become Lee County. In 1837, following Seminole Wars and Creek Indian Wars, Spanish settlers arrived to found Fort Myers and other towns on the mainland Floridian Peninsula; however, they quickly abandoned their homesteads for fear of attack from Seminoles and Creek Indians. In 1838-39 Lieutenant Colonel James Wilkinson's 7th Infantry Regiment under Major General Winfield Scott attacked and burned down an encampment of Seminoles at Moccasin Bend on the Stonington River about east of present-day Homestead; this event helped spur development around Moccasin Bend (now called downtown Orlando). By 1840 some 210 people lived near Fort Myers when it was moved from its original location about south of present-day Sanford to its current site east of Orange Blossom Trail just north of downtown during construction of U.S. Army Corps Road No. 20 (later Interstate 4). Homestead, Florida was founded in 1835 by John and Anna Morse. The Morse family operated a ferry service from the town to the mainland until 1870 when they sold their business to J.P. Morgan Company. The first settlers were farmers who grew corn, beans, cattle, and wheat for food and fiber. In 1881 the company built a mill on the town's original landing beach which later became known as Harbor Island Park. The town was renamed Homestead in 1897 after George Washington Carver moved his farm there from Jacksonville. In 1923 it became part of Miami-Dade County and in 1965 it merged with Miami Beach into one city.
