By 1851, more than 50 people lived at Homestead. In 1865, a road led from Homestead to Tampa. This road became known as U.S. 1 and has been an important artery for transportation ever since. In 1940, during World War II, Homestead served as an airfield for the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF). It also hostedpsychiatric hospitals and other medical facilities during that time period. After the war, many businesses moved to Homestead including plastics company Sunoco Inc., which operated a refinery there until 1984; Paper Mill No. 2 which closed in 1984; Alachua County Hospital (now called University Hospitals Florida) which opened in 1951;and two golf courses- one open only to members of the military and one open to civilians- both developed by Arnold Palmer interests who donated land for them. In recent years, much development has taken place on the original farmsteads located around town including new housing developments (such as Lauderdale Lakes), retail stores (including Walmart), restaurants (including Olive Garden), movie theaters, and parks such as Gulfstream Park Golf Course and Phillips Park with activityodiacs like NASCAR race tracks are also present today on what once was farmland near Tampa Airport
In 1835, the area around Homestead, Florida was purchased by John Holmes from the Seminole Indians. The land originally included 1,500 acres of swampy forest and fields which today are known as Holmes County. In 1836, a group of Englishmen who had arrived in Florida in the ship "Dugald Stewart" began to explore and survey the area. They named their new town after Sir James Douglas (1768-1848), an officer on HMS Discovery who had explored parts of South America and North America during the Age of Discovery. The town was first called Douglasville; however, it was decided that this name would be too formal for a community where people were mostly British settlers. In 1840, when attention turned to developing what is now Broward County, Douglasville became one of several towns designated as such. At that time it consisted of just over 100 residents. By 1845, however, Douglasville had increased its population to 350 residents and had voted to become a county seat.
