The Jacksonville Beach coffee scene is entrenched in its history and culture. The region has been home to a variety of coffeehouses, roasters, and cafes since the early 1800s. From small independent businesses to larger chains, there have been many Jacksonville Beach coffeehouses that have helped shape the identity of the town. Some of the earliest Coffee Shops in Jacksonville Beach were The Gilded Cage and Java Junction. These businesses operated out of local grocery stores and sold fresh-roasted coffee beans from their own roasting plants. They were known for their high quality standards and their commitment to family-owned business ownership. In 1916, Java Junction was purchased by Harry Noland who renamed it The Java House. In 1924, Harry Noland passed away and his son became the owner/operator of The Java House which remain in operation today as part of Jaxco Coffee Corporation (JCC). During World War II, Jacksonville Beach was heavily affected by war production needs due to its proximity to Tampa Bay. Consequently, several large companies relocated their headquarters or manufacturing facilities within commuting distance from Jacksonville Beach. One such company was United Cigar & Brewing Company (UCB). UCB moved from our then downtown location on Orange Avenue to a new facility on Glassell Street in 1945. This move allowed them to expand their retail operations into an adjacent building which they called “The Brewery” – providing access for locals who could not visit them at their original location because they were wartime production sites! orean immigrants began arriving in droves during the 1940s after they had freedom following World War II ended. Many of these immigrants were needed on jax beaches military bases where they would roast coffee beans for troops stationed nearby! During this time period, various small roasters popped up all over town offering different levels of quality at varying prices; however, only JAXCO DEVIL’S COFFEE produced pure Arabica Coffee beans for human consumption!!
