Jacksonville Beach is a town in Jacksonville County, Florida, United States. The population was 21,941 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Jacksonville Beach were Giovanni da Verrazzano and his group of Italian explorers on their way from Havana to Hispaniola in 1493. They named it "Verrazano's Beach" after Veroazzano, one of their number. In 1829, Captain John Stroud discovered what would become Jacksonville Bay when he landed at Jaxon Inlet while exploring the area for new land grants. He named the bay "Jaxon" after his patron Saint James (the Apostle). In 1892, city officials decided to build a wharf on Jaxon Inlet in order to create more space for shipping and commerce in the newly founded city of Jacksonville. The first phase of this project was completed in 1893; however, heavy rains caused extensive flooding that destroyed many homes and businesses along the waterfront. A second phase was completed two years later and included construction of a pier and new dockside buildings. By 1902, Jacksonville had become an important seaport with over 1 million passengers passed through its ports each year. At that time, it became necessary to build a larger dockyard capable of handling large ships due to increasing amounts of traffic coming into and leaving Jacksonville Beach during peacetime as well as during World War I because America's demand for military supplies surged ahead of Europe's ability to produce them domestically. The original downtown core developed around this enlarged dockyard complex which remain today known as Old City Hall Square across from State House Annex and just north of Interstate 95/US-1 intersection
