The Jacksonville, Florida Air Force Base is home to the 5th Airlift Wing. The wing provides airlift to various military and national security missions in and around Jacksonville. Additionally, the wing oversees a number of civil aviation projects that support military operations in the area. In 1992, the wing was renamed Aerospace Defense Command (AFC) after AFC's predecessor organization, Tactical Air Command (TAC). In 2006, the 5th Airlift Wing became part of Air Mobility Command (AMC). The 5th Airlift Wing currently has an operating range of 4,000 miles. In 1947, when Jacksonville was designated as a major naval port city by Governor Lawton Chiles, it marked one of America’s earliest exercises in fighter aviation. That year saw Navy pilots take off from NAS Jacksonville for their first combat flights over Korea. By 1951-1952, NAS Jacksonville had become home to both Naval Fighter Squadron Three (NFFS-3) and Naval Attack Squadron Nine (NATV-9), which were activated under TAC’s Third Fleet command structure with Marine Corps fighter squadrons attached for aerial refueling during amphibious warfare exercises at Iwo Jima and Okinawa. NFFS-3 flew Boeing P-47D “ Thunderbolts” while NATV-9 flew Lockheed P-38L “Mighty Eighth” fighters providing air defense for Task Force 58 during Operation Coronet – Landing on Okinawa on 7 April 1945; also flying sorties against Japanese targets ashore including communications centers at Kure and Kobe inland waters elsewhere on Okinawa…….. According to historical records: On 15 September 1949 during fiscal year 1950through 8 September 1951 USS Stribling (PFG 2) collided with USS Godfrey Broughton DD 923 while taking off from NAS Jacksonville; all five crewmen killed……………. On 1 October 1952 USS Godfrey Broughton DD 923 collided with USS Forrestal VPF 6810 whilst landing at NAS Pensacola; both ships lost all hands……………. On 20 November 1952 USS Forrestal VPF 6810 collided with USS John F Kennedy CVE 6911 whilst enroute from NAS Key West to Miami; both ship lost all hands……………. Allocated blame: collision between Stribling & Godfrey Broughton…………….. With no survivors from either ship……… After investigations it was determined that: There was probable cause for collision between vessels due to proximity of two islands within 3 nautical miles each……….. Contributing factors were: 1) godfrey broughton had just completed reloading his tanks after takeoff from jfk airport when stribling came into visual range & began traveling at high speed towards them; AIR FORCE BASE OPERATIONS REPORT NO. 508/49 noted this fact…………………………………………………………………………………………….. 2) due to altitude differences between vessels they contacted each other only about 100 yards away before contact was made Visual Range should have been 350 yards or more................. NAVY AIRCRAFT REPORTS OF THE ERA 1950 thru 1955 noted that this rule should be obeyed when approaching another vessel....................... 2nd Lt Cmdr James A Sperry commanding VPF 6810 stated he would have never reached conclusions if he knew therewas no danger involved ......................... The result of these collisions led to recommendations being made concerning how close together aircraft must be priorTo engaging in combat.................. This resulted in increased safety precautions being put into effect aboard all Navy ships using jets until well into the 21st century.............

Jacksonville, Florida is a city located in Duval County, Florida. The population was 2,711 as of the 2010 census. Jacksonville is home to the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Jacksonville Jags football team of the National Football League (NFL). The first permanent English settlement in what is now Jacksonville was made by Captain John St.John on September 3, 1796 during his expedition from Pensacola, Florida to explore and trade with Spanish colonists in that area. The town of Jacksonville was platted on December 12, 1824 by General Andrew Jackson's brother-in-law Colonel James Wilkinson. The name may have been inspired by Spanish for "the Everglades" or "God's country". On July 4, 1851, Jacksonville became part of United States territory when it was ceded to Mexico under the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. As part of this treaty also included Santa Fe County and parts of Escambia and Alachua counties in Alabama and Texas respectively – land which later become known as Duval County – Jacksonville stood out as an especially attractive location for American settlers because it had no natural barriers to entry such as rivers or mountains. In 1892 Governor Emilio Gonzalez called for a referendum on whether to annex Estero Peninsula into Duval County; however, only about 50% voted in favor of annexation. In 1916–17 voters passed a resolution authorizing Mayor Harry Bridges to annex more than one thousand acres (400 hectares) east of US 92 due to fears that if Estero Peninsula were annexed into Duval County there would be little opportunity for development along that stretch of highway because landowners would then have an advantage over developers seeking properties near Interstate 95 traffic arteries. This amendment passed unanimously but never came into effect because soon after Mayor Bridges resigned from office due to term limits set by the county commissioners at the time he received certification from state officials that he had not violated those terms; therefore annexation failed again two years later at 70%. In 1935 Developer James Sperry organized plans for what would eventually become DowntownJacksonville which quickly emerged as one ofDuval County's most popular areas for shopping and dining after becoming well known through promotional materials created by Sperry himself such as photographs taken at various points along Floridas Turnpike leading into downtown with views looking out over Elliott Bay including past USS Morgan shipyards which closed down in 1967 following World War II production activity ashore there; today these structures can still be seen from Interstate 95 Business Loop northbound just prior thereto whereupon I-95 turns inland continuing its route parallel thereto until reaching Interstate 10 adjoining Rodriguez Rd thence turning northwest concurrent with I-10 passing through DeSoto Highlands until terminating near Gulfport Boulevard outside City Hall South side arterial road extension current day site formerly within city limits
