The Jacksonville, Florida Army National Guard is one of the oldest military forces in the United States. The unit was organized on July 1, 1810 and first served as a militia regiment under the command of Captain John Ritchie. The first commander of the Jacksonville Militia Regiment was Colonel Isaac Smith. In 1814, Major General James K. Polk called upon the Jacksonville Militia to help protect Mobile Bay from British Naval vessels while he fought against Napoleon Bonaparte in Europe. The militia responded and helped protect Mobile Bay for three days before retreating back to Jacksonville. In 1818, the unit was redesignated as a battalion under Captain William Troup and served with distinction during Waco Siege. A year later, battalion was redesignated again as an infantry brigade under Brigadier General David Hunter and fought at Battle of Horseshoe Bend where they were combined with State Troopers from Tallahassee to repulse Texas Rangers led by Sam Houston. After successfully repelling this invasion attempt, Hunter placed his brigade in reserve for duty at Creek Valley Campaign when it became clear that Mexico would not recognize Ulysses S Grant’s victory over Napoleonic France In 1865, Florida statehood was granted and the Jacksonville Militia Brigade became elements of newly created 2nd Infantry Division which garrisoned Pensacola cotton plantations until 1898 when it moved to Tampa Bay to become part of 3rd Infantry Division which had jurisdiction over all triangular area east of St Petersburg including Pinellas County In 1941 after World War II ended Jacksonville mobilized for war service once again joining other states forming Military District 9 which included mainland Alabama through Georgia On September 15th 1944 Jax Ordered into Federal Service manning ship USS Constitution On November 30th 1945 USS Constitution decommissioned at Key Largo N/A

Despite these changes, however, no new design has ever become popular enough to replace traditional dogtags and badges within the army culture overall; rather they continue remain primarily ceremonial items used only when special occasions arise such as national Remembrance Day or when an event occurs outside normal army regulations such as an international peacekeeping mission.
