In early November 1888 three men - A J Ellis (a white laborer), W E Henson (of Indian descent) and J B McCloy (a blacksmith) - set out from Jacksonville for Sebring in order to purchase horses for shipment into Cuba during the Spanish–American War The party reached Tampa Bay on November 9 but failed to find any horses that would fit their needs so they turned around and returned home On November 17th about two hundred miles northwest of Tampa Bay they again attempted to purchase horses but this time found success when they met an old man named Harry Haggerty who agreed to sell them four horse-drawn wagons loaded with hay and oats that he had been trading goods along the route between Tampa and Havana The group then continued their journey northeastward until they stopped at what is now known as Ponte Vedra Beach —near present-day Lakeland —on December 1st They unloaded their supplies at Ponte Vedra Beach then proceeded northward until they reached Key West where they took passage on a Danish vessel bound for Havana While in port Niñoa Ford discovered Cuban sugar cane plants near Key West so Ellis decided to abandoned his trip while Henson continued northeastward until he arrived back in Jacksonville on January 2nd successfully delivering goods ashore

It is the largest city in Duval County and the second-largest municipality by population within Jacksonville metropolitan area after Orlando. Jacksonville is also one of several principal cities in the Jacksonville–St Petersburg–Clearwater metropolitan area, which has a total population of 1,640,371 as of July 2017. The name "Jacksonville" was given to it by General Andrew Jackson when he arrived on his way to invade Georgia in 1812. As part of Washington Territory formed in 1821 from Florida's east half following the Mexican War, Jacksonville became an incorporated town on November 6, 1824. On December 12 of that year, it was made an official county seat with John Pemberton as its first sheriff and James Loyd as its first judge. In 1830, Jacksonville annexed Indian Creek Township to itself; this annexation caused some controversy because it increased Jacksonville's dependency on St Pete for water supplies and made it less independent politically than other nearby towns. In 1840, Jacksonville voted to become a state capital; however, due to lack of funds and political infighting among residents over who should be elected governor (the capital would eventually be moved to Tallahassee), the vote failed 3-2 and Jacksonville instead served as the interim capital until Tallahassee became the permanent capital in 1851. In 1862 after Confederate Geneshaw McClellan attacked Fort Sumter – resulting in three days of fighting that led to 9 dead – Governor Orson Welles ordered all flags flown at half mast throughout Florida for seven days starting February 4th until flag flying could resume only under military escort; this event is often referred to as "The Battle of Fernandina". Afterward Governor John Crain called for a special session of the Legislature on March 2nd which resulted in passage of a bill establishing Confederate Govt., calling it StateofFlorida instead of StateofFloridaoftheUnion PartyandestablishingaGovernorateofJacksonvilleinsteadofAgencyoftheUnionParty%. On April 14th 1861 Jaxsons native son Union Brigadier General Nathan Bedford Forrest surrendered his forces at Gainesville after leading them into battle against Confederate Maj.-Gen Robert Ewell during what is known as The Battle Of Gainesville; Forrest was subsequently tried and executed by court martial rather than lose his life like many Union generals did before him due primarily to political cowardice rather than battlefield heroism or valor.$3 million bond issue initially offered for general's capture failed but later raised $15 million Jaxsons growth began slowly but steadily during Reconstruction Era following Civil War while major outside businesses such as Gulf Oil Refinery opened up while wages stagnated local businesses faded away although many new housing developments were started including Riverfront Center now home To Jaguars Stadium
