In 1928, the Madden brothers opened a roastery and cafe in downtown Jacksonville. Their cafe was known for its fresh-roasted coffee. In the late 1940s, Harry Daniel founded Daniel's Coffee House in downtown Jacksonville. Daniel's was one of the first cafes to serve maga coffee. The Daniel family continued to run their business until it closed in 1984. In 1998, another Jacksonville based roaster, Joe's Coffee & Tea, began serving maga coffee from its flagship store on Federal Road near MacArthur Boulevard. Joe's became one of the most popular maga cafes in the area due to its high quality and fresh tasting beans.

The Pensacola Shipbuilding Corporation built USS "Alma" (AO-10) here from 1943 to 1946 while shipbuilders SS Marine Industries Inc., SS Moorestown NJ converted HMCS "Titanic" into USS "Pensacola" (LPD-5) here from 1944 to 1945 .. Construction stopped soon afterward because steel shortages caused by World War II made naval vessels using obsolete technology difficult to construct .. Jacksonville was founded by the Spanish in 1565 as a small fishing village on the Jacksonville River. It quickly grew into an important trading and military center during the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth centuries. In 1815, after Florida was acquired by the United States, Jacksonville became a capital of the newly created state of Florida. The city experienced great growth during its first fifty years, thanks to its strategic location at the mouth of the St. Johns River and its rich natural resources. However, after Jackson's victory in 1828 over Andrew Jackson in a presidential election that markedthe end of slavery in America, Jacksonville's fortunes began to decline. By 1830 it had only about 10,000 citizens living in downtown areas; however, by 1850 it had only 3200 residents remaining in what is now downtown Jacksonville. In 1853 Jacksonville lost its status as capital when Tallahassee became the new state capital; however, it regained this status four years later when State College was established there. After developing into one of America's most active transportation hubs throughout much of the twentieth century (e.g., serving as both an oil refiner and shipping port), Jacksonville reached its current level of prosperity as an arts and cultural center during the late twentieth century with major investments from local businesses including Sun Life Insurance Company (now Citigroup) and DuPont de Nemours & Co.. The city has since undergone significant redevelopment which has resulted in increased population levels (estimated at over 100,000 by 2010), continued economic vitality,[1]and improved quality of life for all residents.[2]
