After American independence from Spain was achieved in November 1812, General Andrew Jackson invaded Cuba and under General Henry Dearborn advanced through southern Duval County to seize Pensacola Bayou for the new United States Navy; after landing on November 12th he began his march upriver to Havana via Pensacola Bayou but encountered strong resistance from Native Cuban partisans led by José Martínez y Mesa which obliged him to turn back and return to Mobile on December 3rd). By this time most of Tampa had been taken over by Seminole Indians as well as some 4,000 British soldiers garrisoned there under Major General David Hunter who had arrived with reinforcements from England just before Christmas 1813 after Russian forces sacked St Petersburg – depriving Washington of its main transport artery across the Gulf of Mexico In 1840 Jacksonville became part of Indian Territory when Seminole Indians were removed westward into Oklahoma Territory following their successful rebellion against white rule during the 1830s known as The Trail Of Tears (see also: Creek Rebellion).
