(Photo by Joe Robbins/Getty Images) In 1961, when America's space race was heating up, a group of scientists at the University of Michigan created an airfield on a remote island in Jupiter, Fla., ready to launch Polaris missiles against Moscow's orbiting satellites. The site became known as "Polaris Island" because it would be where rockets were launched from for years to come. The airport served as home base for Operation Overcast--the first time American bombers had flown into Cuba since World War II--and also handled overflights by other countries such as Canada and Chile during that period of Cold War hysteria. In 1966–1967, when JFK was president and exploring America's options for space exploration—including Cape Canaveral's use as a launching pad for intercontinental ballistic missiles—he decided to create an air force presence at Apollo Air Base in order to provide security for sensitive launches there from Vandenberg AFB back in California (then called Mayflower AFB). As part of this enlarged USAF footprint within Kennedy’s new Space Race strategy announced during his speech before Congress on July 20th of that year––titled "A New Frontier"—the first Boeing 747-400 was delivered to Apollo AFB on October 9th of that year aboard a Douglas Aircraft DC-8 Globemaster III! This plane flew strategic missions over Southeast Asia through 1973 but was retired after its last flight from Andersen AFB near Guam on March 8th 1974! As one might expect given its long history and proximity to world events here at Jupiter AFB––which began operations September 6th 1912 with the arrival of 5 PBYG seaplanes––aircraft have been used extensively here including over 100 different models including fighter planes such as F4U Corsair fighters; bombers like B-29 Superfortresses; helicopters such as Mx helicopter gunships; Special Operations Forces units like Delta Force; Antarctic Ops commandos assigned primarily to McMurdo Station (later called Palmer Land); civic action programs supporting environmental causes hereabouts; numerous disaster relief missions hosted by our military partners both inside and outside our hemisphere during hurricanes Aristide (1991), Katrina (2005), Rita (2006), Wilma (2008), Ana Lisa (2010)……..the list goes on! It is no wonder then that Flight Museum Aviation historian Don Gaylor has written about "Jupiter AFB & The History Of The U S Air Force Jet Airlift Wing" which will be published soon!!!!!!

Jupiter, Florida is a small town located in Duval County, Florida. It was founded on November 3rd, 1868 by W. P. Starling and his wife Fannie Starling as a post office called Jupiter Station. The first store in the town was built in 1870 by A.P. Crouch and it operated until 1912 when it burned down. In 1913, the town was renamed after Jupiter, Italy and the first hotel was built in that year. In 1916, the name of the town changed to Jupiter Station again and until 1970 it continued to be called that way even though there are no ruins from either of those times period anymore. The population of Jupiter decreased from its peak of around 1,000 residents in 1960 to just over 500 residents by 2000 due to many reasons such as high crime rates and a lack of jobs opportunities for people who have children living at home. However, with the recent growth of nearby Jacksonville due to new development and an increase in tourismgambling has become one of the main sources of income for locals which has helped preserve some aspects of their culture while also creating new opportunities for businesses within the community
