Jupiter, Florida is a small, rural town located in Polk County, Florida. The population was 2,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The town's name comes from George Jupiter who settled there in 1851. The first post office was established in Jupiter on October 9, 1855. In 1865, a school and general store were built there by local citizens. A church was also built that year and named for Reverend Augustus Dowling who served as pastor of the First Baptist Church in Jacksonville from 1865 to 1879. In 1906, the name change to Jupiter after it was chosen as one of four towns in the state of Florida for consideration for annexing into Jacksonville (the others being Gainesville, Dunedin and St Petersburg). After annexation occurred on November 3rd 1906, residents voted to add an additional 500 acres (2 km²) to the town limits making it official Jupiter Freetown! As one of only a few small towns withinJacksonville metro area during that time period.,Jupiter experienced many changes over its years including becoming a manufacturing center with industry such as paintball equipment production starting up around 1990 and becoming home to two JAX Airport casinos: One known today as Trump Taj Mahal Resort & Casino while another complex called: Plantation House which included several thousand square feet (100 m²) of floor space employed over 1,000 people at its peak back when it opened in 1992 before quickly shutting down due to financial troubles; both complexes are now gone but their memories remain throughout downtown’s various businesses which have collectively seen more than $1 billion in economic activity since 2006! Since 2000 however most growth has come from new housing projects such as Lakeshore Place – completed in 2007 – which became known as one of city’s newest neighborhoods; Heritage Crossing which opened adjacent to Veterans Memorial Coliseum just south of Interstate 95 exit 417 late last year followed by Crossroads Village adjacent I-95 exit 431 featuring 260 single family homes development announced last fall; all three developments are expected to bring between $165 million and $225 million in investment directly or indirectly onto local economy each!
