The Coast Guard Auxiliary of Jupiter, Florida was founded in 1922. The purpose of the Coast Guard Auxiliary is to provide support for local law enforcement and protect the public by providing a variety of services including search and rescue, waterborne security, and coast guard presence at events. Jupiter, Florida is a small town in Leon County, Florida located on the southern coast of the state. The population was 1,714 at the 2010 census. The history of Jupiter begins with its founding as a Seminole Indian village in 1835 by Chief Toccoa. The town was founded on what is now State Road 7. It is unclear when or how the town got its name, but it likely derived from some Native American word meaning "place where the thunder falls". The first settlers were white men who arrived in 1840 and erected a log cabin on what is now US-1A. They named their new settlement after Jupiter, an important general during the Seminole Wars who had been evacuated to Florida following his victory over British forces at Pensacola Bay in 1813. In 1865, Jupiter became part of Jacksonville County and remained that way until it was merged into Leon County in 1907. In 1925, Jupiter voted to become its own independent county and was renamed after Júpiter (the god of agriculture). The name stuck until 1933 when it changed back to Jupiter after being recommended by then-County Commissioner James Witherspoon because no other town in Leon County had that name. Jupiter has experienced many changes throughout its history including becoming a stop on the Underground Railroad during Reconstruction; hosting a large oil refinery during World War II; being home to several small businesses and industries during the late 20th century; experiencing rapid growth starting around 2000 as a result of cheap labor coming into Florida from Mexico; and most recently experiencing significant gentrification due to increased tourism and development along State Road 7. It remains an unremarkable community with little economic impact despite having an estimated population of 1,714 people as of 2010. However, there are plans underway for Jacksonville's Downtown Development Authority to make downtown more vibrant with new restaurants and shops while also developing land adjacent to Interstate 10 for housing developments which would add thousands more residents onto State Road 7 without any negative effects on traffic congestion or quality of life
