Jupiter, Florida is an unincorporated community located in Polk County, Florida, United States. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The population was 1,837 at the 2010 census. The town was named after Jupiter in Latin and was established in 1886 by Anna J. Cook as a small farming community on the east side of Lake Okeechobee. The name "Jupiter" was taken from a Greek planet and its symbol, a yellow horse with wings spread outwards. Cook's idea for the town came about because she believed that if people could find their way to Jupiter they would be able to get around the state of Florida easily. The original settlers were mostly women who grew crops and raised chickens. By 1912 there were only 10 residents living in Jupiter; all of which had come from other places within Florida or Alabama. A post office called Jupiter was established in 1886, and remained open until it closed in 1990. The first school opened in 1889; it taught children between the ages of five and twelve years old. In 1893, a Methodist church began services at what is now known as First Methodist Church property dedication ceremonies are still held every year; this event marks one of the earliest public demonstrations of organized religion in Jupiter during which money was exchanged for land deeds from early settlers themselves! In 1894 when conditions allowed for schools outside Jacksonville due to lack of space within city limits (Jacksonville had then expanded 5 times), Mrs Cook organized her pupils into two classes: one for white children age four through eight grades and another for colored children grade nine through twelve years old who sat together during recess instead of having separate classrooms! After Mr Cook’s death his widow continued instruction until 1928 when Instructional District No 2 merged with District No 3 making teaching available to all students regardless race or sex! The Jupiter, Florida History Museum is a museum in Jacksonville, Florida that tells the story of the area from its early Native American settlements to its time as a key port on the Miami-Dade County line. The museum also features exhibits about local history and culture. In 1565, Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto discovered what would become Jacksonville while exploring south Florida. Spain began building Fort Duval in 1695, which became one of Jacksonville's most important locations. In 1815, United States forces captured Jacksonville from the Seminoles and renamed it after General James K. Polk during their campaign against Seminole independence. The city was hit hard by the Great Depression and World War II; however, it has bounced back since then and currently ranks as one of Jacksonville's most vibrant neighborhoods. The Jupiter neighborhood was first developed around 1900 as a working-class community for sailors and other maritime workers who used the dockside businesses for food storage, laundry services, and other needs. The population of Jupiter peaked at over 100 in 1940 but has declined since then due to gentrification and loss of jobs in shipbuilding or related industries. "Jupiter: A Gateway to Florida" is an exhibit on display at the Jupiter History Museum that tells the story of how George Washington Goode founded Goode Shipbuilding & Drydock Company in 1897 on land that he donated to Jacksonville along with $5 million dollars needed to rebuild after Hurricane Andrew destroyed much of downtown in 1992. From there Goode built some of America's largest ships including USS Constitution (the first U.S warship ever commissioned), USS Enterprise (the first guided missile destroyer), USS John F Kennedy (the last U.S battleship), USS Atlanta (a nuclear submarine tender), CSS Savannah (a Confederate cruiser SSBN) and many more."
