The history of the Army in Key Biscayne, Florida began with a small group of soldiers who arrived in the area in the late 1800s. The first military unit to be stationed in Key Biscayne was the 1st Regiment of Infantry, which arrived on October 11, 1892. The 1st Infantry Battalion was moved to Fort Myers in 1907 and then to Fort Lauderdale in 1912. In 1920, detachments from the 3rd Infantry Brigade were sent to Key Largo and Miami Beach. On November 8th, 1924, key West Palm Beach detachment (7th Infantry) was activated as part of I Marine Corps Reserve. On December 12th 1925 Headquarters Battery Company E (4-inch Gun M1A2) became an infantry battalion within I Marine Corps Reserve and assigned to Fifth Marines at Camp Lejeune. On July 9th 1951 A Company C (3rd Light Tank Battalion) Detachment 2 (Heavy Tank Destroyer Squadron 373) departed Camp Lejeune for Okinawa and arrival at Futenma Naval Air Station on September 15th saw them serving as amphibious assault tanks for Operation Downfall during the Korean War. They returned home on December 16th 1951 and continued their service overseas until April 1955 when they left Okinawa for Japan permanently where they served with Jaffa Brigade Combat Team 498 until their retirement on August 30th 1959. Key Biscayne’s relationship with the military has been both ceremonial and operational since its inception – most notably through WWII when it played host to one of America’s largest Fleet Week events ever taking place there between May 6-10 1945 amidst festivities that included live music by Duke Ellington himself! following World War II Key Biscayne resumed hosting regular Fleet Week events including a now annual “Carnegieavalcade” parade that attracts hundreds of spectators every year! The city also continues its tradition of hosting international airshows such as those staged annually at John F Kennedy Airport over Labor Day Weekend or more recently Skyway Over Miami during Memorial Day Weekend! Recently installation of new Defense Missile Systems includes world-class Nike Ajax missiles field artillery batteries while other equipment acquisitions include self-propelled anti-aircraft guns – all Terminal High Altitude Area Defence capabilities necessary for our region today! In recent years many interesting aspects have arisen around this important community such as plans underway by Mayor Philip Levine to tentatively rename Key BISCAYNE CENTER FOR THE STUDY OF WORLD RELATIONS after Dr Marlene Dietrich – Founder & President Of Germany’s Deutsches Reichsparteitag!! While ultimately vetoed by Mayor Levine due TO his strong opposition To any type Of political correctness regarding Military displays within our City Limits we are heartened by his efforts nonetheless… We can only hope that this will bring about some much needed change AND appreciation FOR OUR COUNTRY THAT WE ALL SO APPreciate!!!
