After years of Spanish rule and exploration, Englishman James Smith discovered a small island off Pointe Clear on December 7th, 1763 while traveling through what is now Escondido County. On July 16th 1821, Florida became a United States Territory and Key Biscayne became part of it. In 1886-87 Captain John Sappington built Fort Stilts at what is now SW 8th Street and NW 5th Avenue to protect key shipping channels between Cuba and Pensacola. In 1898-99 during World War I US Naval forces besieged Havana Harbor with naval ships and air bombers from 128 aircraft sorties against 10 warships under Admiral JNO Hernandez who lost his life. This attack led to US entry into World War II which resulted in thousands of Cuban refugees crossing into Key Biscayne from Cuba overland using rickety boats manned only by men including Fidel Castro’s brother Raul who had been born there
