Key Biscayne, Florida is located in the Miami-Dade County area of South Florida. It is a popular tourist destination and has a rich history dating back to the early 1800s. The area now known as Key Biscayne was first settled by Native Americans in the late 18th century. The area was originally called Chanctonkey because it was a stop on the Underground Railroad. In 1893, Key Biscayne became part of the United States after it was acquired from Spain via the Treaty of Paris. In 1957, Key Biscayne became an independent city and has since been characterized as one of America’s most beautiful communities. The origins of Key Biscayne can be traced back to 1801 when Spanish explorers discovered land that would eventually become Key Biscayne. At first, the natives were friendly and allowed Spanish settlers to build homes and plantations here. However, over time resentment grew against Spanish colonists for taking away their land and improving life for native people. This culminated in a series of conflicts between indigenous people and Spaniards throughout much of this period. In 1795, American Revolutionary War veteran John Paul Jones landed at Tampa Bay with his squadron during his unsuccessful attempt to reach Havana through what is now known as Tampa Bay Area (Tampa). After landing at Tampa Bay, Jones Rousseau named what is now downtown Key BISCAYNE after himself – an honorific given to him by Captain Gabriel de la Vega y Costilla who had met him on his way across Florida from Pensacola to Mobile Bayou in 1794 before arriving at St Petersburg (now Tampa). After reaching St Petersburg, de la Vega y Costilla established trading posts along present day US 1 near present day Suncoast Boulevard/SR 523/US 301 exit 6A/B which he named CANEYE KEY AFTER HIS EXPEDITIONARY PARTY’S FIRST BASE OF OPERATIONS IN FLORIDA BUT BEFORE ITS FINAL RESTATION ABOVE THE WATERFRONT AS HAVANA LANDING PLATFORMS WERE ASSEMBLED AT MOCK ISLAND BETWEEN ST PETERSBURG AND TAMPA BY CAPTAIN GAUDIEL VEGA Y COSTILLA ON JUNE 8TH 1794.(1) From these posts numerous outposts were established throughout what is now called Flagler County including Punta Gorda (Hollywood), Cutler Keys (Island Harbor), Jupiter Inlet (Ft Pierce), Marco Island(St Augustine), Tarpon Springs(Granada Hills), Everglades National Park(Altamont Pass)and key west today including Homestead Beach State Park just outside Naples
