It operated out of this station until 1959 when it moved to its current location at 1st Street South and Broadway East. The Key West, Florida history begins with the first human beings inhabiting what is now the city of Key West in 1845. The area that is now Key West was a trading post on the lower Keys and was home to several different cultures before Spanish settlers arrived in 1565. They founded a small town on the mainland which they named San Miguel de Allende. In 1865, Juan Ponce de León discovered the island and made it his personal property after claiming it for Spain. He named it Puerto Rico after himself. The Spanish Explorers also came across an abundant oil well on the Island in 1795 but did not explore it as extensively as they wanted because they were worried about potential Indian attacks. The British discovered this oil well and began exploration in earnest in 1819, but instead of naming their discovery Britannia they called it Marathon because one of their ships found evidence of Marathonian gold coins near the site. As a result, many people started calling Key West Marathon because of this connection to Britain. In 1840, Hurricane Andrew struck Cuba and caused extensive damage to that country’s infrastructure so much so that Englishman John Foyle set up shop in Havana as an insurance salesman; he became known as “the Hurricane King” for his efforts during this time period.
