The Key West Police Department has been a part of the community since 1892. The department is responsible for policing the city and its surrounding areas. The department also provides security for essential public events, such as religious services and parades. In addition to its patrol duties, the Key West Police Department offers a range of other law enforcement services, including crime prevention, investigation, and response. One of the earliest police departments in Key West was founded in 1892 by Captain John A. Armstrong with support from Mayor James Burchardt. At that time, Key West was a small town with only a handful of residents police officers and firefighters. In 1906, Captain Harry Cook organized the first municipal police force in Key West when he became head of the city’s fire brigade. That same year saw the formation of Keyside Watch Company which provided auxiliary law enforcement services until 1958 when it was disbanded due to lack of officer resources. In 1916 Captains George Waddell and Clarence Fenton organized an all-volunteer police force which served as an auxiliaries to theKey West Fire Department throughout World War I until 1919 when Municipal Law No 2 gave citizens exclusive right to hire their own policemen without fear of annexation by neighboring municipalities or military service during wartime. In 1937 Captain Frank Hickey formed a volunteer patrol unit which patrolled streets within three blocks radius around City Hall until 1939 when commandeering from private sources resulted in disbanding this unit permanently due to budget limitations at that time. A King’s County detachment (later renamed Squadron) operated outof City Hall from 1940-1945 before being absorbed into Captain Harry Cook’s original Keyside Watch Company forces in 1945-1946; both detachments were reorganized into Patrol Units effective 1st January 1947 under current name “Police Dept., KeyWest Incorporated”). On 15th November 1951 new Constitution was ratified providing for Citizen Policemen appointed by Mayor instead of Councilor term limited officeholders; Constables are salary grade officers who work on detail basis with Pollack having overall responsibility for each precinct while subordinate officers report directly to him; presently there are eleven sworn Constables employed full time with one retiring every two years; Supplementary Officers are sworn members not employed full time but answerable at any time for duty performed while on detail or away from their posts as required by statute or ordinance…. Richardson purchased some 640 acres (252 hectares) from Jabez Bowen III who had been leasing it from Father Manuel de la Vega since 1856 for $10 per year rent plus costs associated with maintaining it including irrigation systems, buildings and roads connecting it with other parts of town Thus began KeyWest's long association with tourism industry - one that continues even today! The city experienced rapid growth following World War II due in part to defense contracts being awarded by then Defense Secretary Forrestal which resulted in an influx of white workers into a formerly black community! Some historians have argued that development within urban areas can lead not onlyto increased crime rates but also contributes significantly towards social segregation; however there are no definitive statistics available regarding this topic! nonetheless keywest is frequently cited as one example demonstrating how Urban sprawl can contribute positively towards social integration - something many regions struggle with every day!
