In the early 1900s, Kissimmee was a small town in central Florida. It was known for its agriculture and fishing industries, and few people had any idea that there was an airforce stationed here. The first air force base in Kissimmee was established in 1917 as a military post to support the American war effort. At its peak, the air force had over 1,000 personnel and operated from four locations in central Florida. But it wasn't until 1955 that the Kissimmee Air Force Base became home to the United States Air Forces Central Command (USAFCENTCOM). This organization was responsible for all U.S. airspace interests worldwide, and it played an important role in advising presidents on strategic matters such as defense spending and troop deployments. The USAFCENTCOM headquarters building still stands today, and it is one of the most recognizable landmarks in town. The building has been used as a museum since 1977, and it currently houses the Kissimmee History Museum which tells the story of how this community came to be associated with aviation buffs and air forces around the world.

As well as weapons systems and aircraft, other gifts have included training equipment, software products and vehicles. In 2007, the Air Force donated two Boeing 777-200ER jets for use by Jordanian Airliners Service Ltd., providing service between Amman and Jordan’s major cities including Dubai, Tel Aviv and Jeddah – making it one of only a handful of airlines that can fly into Syrian airspace without fear of interception by Syrian security services or military units based within Syria itself!

The first permanent settler in Kissimmee was Philander French on December 12, 1836. He and his family arrived from Louisiana. The name "Kissimmee" originated with a Native American term meaning "place where the cedar trees grow." A post office called Kissimmee was established in 1879, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1942. In 1905, an electric streetcar line linking downtown Orlando with Indianola ran through Kissimmee. The line became known as the "Electric Railway of America." In 1907, the Miami metropolitan area absorbed most of Central Florida; Kissimmee consequently lost its railroad connection to Miami and declined into obscurity. However, within a few years tourists were gravitating to this isolated communities for their summertime recreation and business opportunities grew accordingly. By 1949 there were over 1,000 people working in industry in Kissimmee proper while less than 10 people lived outside of town limits; today there are only a handful of businesses remaining which continue to provide essential economic vitality to the community while sustaining much-needed open space preservation
