The Kissimmee Joint Reserve Armory is the largest armory in Southwest Florida. It was originally built as a military depot in Kissimmee, Florida in 1935 and became the primary storage and operating facility for the local military forces during World War II. The armory has been continuous operation since then, playing an important role in both county and state defense. In recent years, the armory has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in Southwest Florida. Kissimmee is a small town located in Volusia County, Florida. It was founded by the Kissimmee Creek Indians in 1839. The name of the town comes from a location on the Kissimmee River called "Kissimmee Key". The first settlers in what is now Kissimmee were the Seminole tribe and their leader, Osceola. In 1838, John C. Stroud and his family moved to what is now Kissimmee from Georgia and started a cotton plantation there. By 1840, over 1,000 people lived in what is now Kissimmee. In 1844, Governor James K. Polk appointed John Quincy Adams as the first U.S. ambassador to Cuba after being elected president that year and he traveled to Santiago de Cuba with American traders to negotiate trade agreements with Spain and Portugal. When he returned to America, he recommended that President 44 increase military spending so as not to fall behind Europe in technological innovation. This led to increased demand for goods imported from Europe which contributed to economic growth for Florida during this time period After leaving Cuba, Adams became an advisor on Reconstruction policy under Andrew Johnson before returning home after being elected vice president of the United States in 1868.. In 1870-71 he served as commissioner of public works under Presidents Grant and Cleveland before dying at home on May 12th, 1871 at age 80 years old After Adams' death local developers began developing land around downtown where they would build homes or businesses until World War II when all but one block went up for sale due to bomb damage caused by Japanese forces during World War II .
