The Kissimmee Army Base has been a part of the United States Armed Forces for over eighty years. It is one of twelve military installations in Florida and was opened on July 14, 1907. The base was originally known as Fort Pierce Naval Station. In 1932, it became known as the Kissimmee Army Air Field and served as an airbase for the U.S.Army during World War II. After the war, it became home to the 5th Infantry Division during peacetime until its activation in 1990 as a strategic nuclear weapons storage and disposal site. In 2003, Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood Airport was renamed Ft. Myers-Kissimmee Army Airfield in honor of members of the USAAF who were killed or wounded while flying from or at Ft.
