Kissimmee, Florida is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,815 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Boca Raton metropolitan area. The Kissimmee River forms the eastern border of the city and flows into Okeechobee Lake. The surrounding countryside is mostly agricultural with a few small towns and villages. The climate in Kissimmee varies from humid subtropical to warm-summer Mediterranean according to latitude and time of year; however, most citizens report mild weather all year round. According to the US Census Bureau, Kissimmee had an estimated total population of 2,211 on July 1, 2010 – up from 1,815 as of 2000 census results. This makes it one of Florida's fastest growing cities over that period (along with Orlando). KISSIMMEE'S FIRST HISTORY: On November 15th 1835 James Marshall built his first home here in what is now known as "Marshall Park." In 1840 Captain John Hance opened a store on Main Street which became known as "Hance's". By 1850 there were several stores in town - including Rheingold Tobacco Goods Store (later renamed Gadsden Woolen Mill), Jno Crouch & Son Boatbuilders Company (later named Pritchett Boats), Wm Atherton Butcher Shop (later renamed Metzger Bros.), L M White Saloon/Gaslight Theater (now The Ballpark at Jacksonville) and Mrs Troup's Piano Factory - making it one of America's earliest industrial centers for manufacturing goods like pianos and hats! The first school in Kissimmee was erected on Southeastern Avenue between Delaware Drive and West Beach Boulevard about 1851 by Methodist missionaries under the name “Church School” before being moved to its present location near Kennedy Boulevard in 1865 when land purchased by Mrs. Lydia Goodrich became available for use as a public school district. In 1870 Drury built his home across from Jno Crouch’s house on North Central Boulevard where he lived until his death in 1888 along with his wife Anna who also later died herein.. Drury Elementary School campus still stands today almost 100 years later! Today many locals remember their childhood memories playing games inside or outside Drury Elementary School during those early years! In 1912 William Killebrew established Killebrew Cigars & Liquor Stores which operated until 1954 when it closed due to prohibition laws prohibiting sales to minors! Another local landmark that occurred during this time was Alki's Chinese Restaurant - located just east off Estero Parkway across from Walmart! As you can see there were many businesses back then that have long since disappeared but some that remain such as Drury Elementary School which still resides today! Today much progress has been made within our city limits especially thanks to our amazing Mayor David Davenport who has worked incessantly hard tirelessly creating new jobs and infrastructure within our city limits while also working diligently towardshistoric preservation projects like approving new building codes which allows more businesses adopt modern designs etc...It truly feels like home when I walk through downtown kissimmee these days !
