Kissimmee is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 43,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Milton–Daytona Beach metropolitan area. The Kissimmee area was first settled by Native Americans in the early eighteenth century. As citrus farming and trade developed, Kissimmee became known as "the Citrus Capital of the World." In 1851, a road was built from Tampa to Jacksonville through Kissimmee and soon other small towns were established there. During Reconstruction in America following the Civil War, many African Americans migrated to Florida; among them were many who worked in the citrus industry. In 1907, a dam was built on Clearwater River to provide power for oranges growing in central Florida; it also provided water for irrigation and town development. In 1955, when Interstate 95 was completed through central Florida, Kissimmee grew rapidly because of its location near several major highways. The city's growth accelerated further during later years due to waves of immigration: Latinos began arriving beginning in the 1970s and continued into the 21st century. By 2000, over 50% of all jobs within the city were held by foreign-born residents. On May 25, 1907, Kissimmee became the first city in Florida to be founded. The area that is now Kissimmee was inhabited by Seminole Indians before Spain and Portugal arrived in the early 17th century. In 1821, a group of Englishmen who had come ashore on Key West Island decided to establish themselves as a town and named it after their native county of England. The town gradually grew and by 1839 it had a population of around 350 people. On December 12, 1861, when Florida became an U.S. state, Kissimmee became its capital. A year later on January 10, 1862, the first post office opened in the city with nine residents receiving mail from Jacksonville at that time. By 1865, there were over 100 residents living in Kissimmee alone and it had become a major port for shipping goods between TampaBay and Miami-Dade County. By 1870-71 there were over 500 people living in Kissimmee while also growing tobacco crops and raising livestock. On November 3rd of that year local officials decided to rename the city “Kissimmee” after General James Haines who had served as their commander during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). At this time most of what is now downtown was still rural farmland although some small houses began to be built on more recent land near US 1 & 192nd Street east of Kennedy Boulevard which would become known as Miracle Mile due to its many high-end businesses established there such as Sears Roebuck & Co., Emerson Electric Company, Jardine Matheson & Co., Coca ColaCola Bottling Plant etc.. In 1901 local officials approved plans for what would eventually become one of America’s largest retail centers when they voted unanimously to build Parke Development Corporation’s vast new shopping mall on Lots 7 through 11 bordering US 1ifty Street called “The Mall” (later renamed Gulf Center Mall). This $20 million project included 4 wings totaling 337 stores including Macy's Department Store (now Macy's Grand Plaza), Belk department store (now Belk Coral Way), Kmart Supercenter (now Kohl's) original location at lot 5 across from Interstate 75 known then as Pigeon Forge Park; two movie theaters: Midway Theatre located across from I-75 exit #314A southbound off US 1; part of Winnie THE WINE COOLER queenstown amusement park which opened October 15th 1904 including an indoor water slide; fairgrounds comprising are pavilion housing five tracks with miniature golf courses modeled after those found at Universal Studios or Six Flags amusement parks; hotel which today forms part of Regency Beach Marriott Resort & Spa - one wing operated by Holiday Inn ExpressHotels Incorporation until deregulation in 1991 then leased back operationally by Marriott Corporation - originally composed primarily Infantry Barracks barracks nos 2 through 4 Romulus Road north side prior owner being Commodore Vanderbilt Hotel Corp.; other features included existing streetcar system extending along lots 6 through 8 north side immediately west of I-75 past present day Regency Beach MARriott Residence Villas development onto parcels previously used for agricultural production....
