Kissimmee, Florida is a city located in the Miami-Dade County, Florida area. As of the 2010 census, the population was 137,452. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area and lies on the border of Broward County to the east and Palm Beach County to the west. The city formed from a merger of two villages: Kissimmee Village and Inverness Gardens. The first settlers in what is now Kissimmee were Italian immigrants who arrived in 1835. Kissimmee, Florida is a town located in Lee County, Florida, United States. The population was 8,849 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in Kissimmee was on the banks of the Apalachicola River and its founders were chiefly British colonists who arrived in 1763 to establish Fort George on this site. The town was named for Captain John Cook's visit to the area in 1795. A post office calledkissimmee was established in 1838 and remained in operation until it was discontinued November 15, 1907. In 1841, General James Kenedy founded a mission station here and named it Mission Drive after San Francisco Bayonne native José Ortiz de la Vega who had accompanied him as his interpreter during his exploration of that area commanded by Commodore David Dixon. In 1892, Kissimmee became one of six towns incorporated within Lee County when it was created from parts of Santa Rosa County and Orange County. On July 14, 1907, Kissimmee was officially incorporated as a city. The first mayor of Kissimmee was J.C. Caulfield. The city's first store was the Fidelity grocery and hardware store on Main Street. In 1912, the city built its first police station on Euclid Avenue. In 1915, the town of Hollywood became a part of Kissimmee and annexation followed in 1916 from DeLand to make up the total population of 17,027 people in 1917 when Hollywood annexed too. In 1925, Kissimmee annexed nearby Maitland County to form a new municipality with an estimated population of 29,811 people as of 2000 census-age residents living within municipal boundaries- making it one of Florida’s largest cities at that time (and still is). In 1932, following passage by the Florida Legislature for local governments to raise money through property assessments for road and bridge projects in their jurisdictions which would be used to finance state government operations such as schools and prisons; Kissimmee raised over $2 million dollars for road repairs alone which were then used to improve east-west streets in downtown including US 1/US 163 (now State Road 527) between I-4/SR 495 and SR 620; also adding US 301 south from SR 520 interchange into the community starting at SR 620 eastward until just past US 281 exit #5 near Interstate 495; this project added 2 miles (3 kilometers) of highway to downtownkissimmee – an important corridor linking all aspects of town with each other while doubling or quadrupling traffic flow on this otherwise rural stretch along State Road 527
