The city is located on Lake Okeechobee and is bordered by Miami-Dade County to the south and west, Brevard County to the north, and Seminole County to the east. In 1955, US Army Air Forces Base (later Camp Stewart) opened nearby which served as headquarters for Tactical Air Command during World War II before becoming Maxwell Field Airport in 1964 after Maxwell Air Force Base closed.[3] In 1968 US Airways moved its main base from Keysville (now Moonlite Key) into Kissimmee when that airline merged with Northwest Airlines;[4] both airlines vacated Maxwell Field soon afterwards due to competition from discount carriers United Parcel Service and FedEx Ground. Kissimmee, Florida is a city located in Orange County, Florida, United States. The population was 41,724 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Mallory–Kissimmee Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that would become Kissimmee was first settled by Osage Indians in the late 18th century. In 1827, General James K. Polk donated land to the town for $500 and named it after his niece, Miss Anna Ladd (1802-1875). The original town had a population of only sixty people. In 1896, Kissimmee became one of two communities in Orange County to establish themselves as dry towns – meaning they did not allow alcoholic beverages sales – when residents of neighbouring Sanford voted to do so based on concerns about becoming too dependant on Miami Beach for entertainment and commerce. As First Lady Agnes Scott toured Kissimmee in 1903 she suggested that the county seat be moved from Sanford to ensure more evenly divided county representation among its citizens and namesake Anna Ladd vetoed her idea because she felt it would unbalance reality if all businesses were located within the limits of one community instead of several hundred miles apart. In 1912, then-county commission chairman Jerald Hines recommended that Kissimmee become an incorporated municipality due to its burgeoning economy and increasing population; however Agnes Scott refused because she believed incorporation would give new impetus to development around downtown instead of preserving existing neighborhoods which she felt were important cultural heritage landmarks. On November 5th 1913 An act incorporating "Kissimmee" passed by a vote of 7-2 with Mayor John Goudreau dissenting; this establishes today's boundaries for Kissimmee consisting primarily of ZIP Code 33808 Alcoholic Beverage Control District territory with a few square miles (less than 1/4 square mile) lying outside those boundaries
