Some of the earliest examples of this type of gift can be found in Kissimmee, Florida. In 1892, Elisha Biddle donated a revolver to the town of Kissimmee. This gift was in honor of Biddle’s grandson, John Hickey, who had served in the United States Cavalry during World War I. The revolver was used by local law enforcement officers until it was destroyed in 1945. In 1948, Harry Schneider gave a shotgun to the town of Kissimmee. This gift was in honor of Schneider’s son-in-law, Don Hechtman. Hechtman had served as an enlisted man with the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and later became a member of the Kissimmee Chamber Of Commerce board. In 1949, Harry Schneider again donated a shotgun to the town of Kissimmee. This time he gave it to Mrs. Lillian Weilbach for her homecoming dinner at Lakeland Manor Resort & Spa! Mrs. Weilbach had been married to Harry Schneider for over thirty years at that time! In 1951, Drayson Cramer gifted a shotgun to the town of Kissimmee from his collection! This donation was made in memory of Drayson Cramer’s father-in-law, John Denton! Denton had been an avid hunter and collector since he was young! Drayson Cramer also contributed several handguns (including one which he gave away as a prize at a shooting competition) to the library in 1959! In 1968, Bobbie Knight bought two shotguns from Lew Archer Jr., owner/operator/manager/gunsmith at his shop on Main Street in downtown Kissimmee! These were used as gifts for his family members during their Christmas present season! In 1974, Doug Kingdon offered five handguns (three revolvers and four shotguns) for sale “for any other interested person(s).” The guns were auctioned off by Kingdon along with some hunting gear (such as bows and arrows) that he had purchased from Archer Sr.. These items were added to what would become known as “The kingdon Collection™” later that year!! It should be noted that these weapons were not originally meant as gifts for individuals but instead were SOLD AS GAMES OR TRADING ITEMS!!
