In 1933, it amalgamated with neighboring Buttermilk Creek to form what is now Citrus County. On January 1, 1934, Kissimmee became a city and today has a population of over 6,000 people. Kissimmee was founded in 1905 by Isaac Asimov and his brother, Harry. The town is located on the east side of Kissimmee Bay, about 30 miles south of Orlando. In 1911, Asimov bought 1,000 acres of land in what is now the city and built a homesite that became home to the first high school in Florida. In 1918, Asimov married his wife Noreen and moved to Kissimmee. There he opened a candy store with his brother-in-law Sam Rosenfeldt and began to sell milk from a cow on their property. In 1922, they started selling ice cream from a truck which became an early favorite among residents. In 1927, Kissimmee Civic Auditorium was built as the first large facility in the area for public events such as dances and plays. It served as the community center until it was destroyed by fire in 1972. The building still stands today and is used for storage purposes by local businesses. In 1935, Raymond Hitchcock opened his successful restaurant Hitch's Place on State Road 3 near present day Lake Katherine Drive. He would later own several other restaurants throughout central Florida before dying in 1978 at age 91 years old. Hitch's Place remains one of Kissimmee's most popular attractions today!
