Kissimmee, Florida is a town located in Polk County,Florida. The population was 18,949 at the 2010 census. Kissimmee is part of the Orlando metropolitan area and is also home to Walt Disney World. Kissimmee was founded by Captain John C. Moseley on November 11,1913 as a small fishing village on the Stonington River just south of what is now known as Walt Disney World Resort. The name "Kissimmee" comes from two Seminole words meaning "to kiss" or "to make love." When Moseley built his first house there in 1913 he named it after his wife's sister who had moved to Florida from Georgia with her parents and siblings when she was only six months old. They called their new home 'The Belle Isle'. In 1924, Moseley donated land for the city limits which today comprises most of downtown Kissimmee. At that time Kissimmee consisted of only one block of land on Lake Okeechobee between Second Street and Third Avenue - bounded by Eastern Avenue to the east (now Fifth Avenue), Central Avenue to the west (now Fourth Street), US-1 north (now US-A1) and Park Boulevard to the south (currently State Road 7). The original town site includes two square blocks measuring about 40 feet wide x 30 feet deep - omitting an alley running along either side of Second Street between Baltic Way and Park Boulevard. The square block formed by Second Street, Central Avenue, US-1 north/south (now State Road 7) and Park Boulevard became known as "the Square". Finally, there was the Iraq War where marines were called into action to help combat Saddam Hussein’s regime. This was an incredibly dangerous task as he had a lot of missiles and weapons on his military which could have easily destroyed any unit or city involved in this conflict. Despite this danger, however, marines continued to serve their country courageously until ultimately being forced out of Iraq in 2003 after Saddam’s collapsing government became too much for them to handle alone.

Kissimmee is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 68,811 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Polk County. The city is located on Lake Okeechobee and is bordered by Miami-Dade County to the north, Palm Beach County to the east, and Brevard County to the south. The area that now known as Kissimmee was first settled by Seminoles in 1823. By 1840, it had become an agricultural community with plantations near present-day Kissimmee Boulevard and 4th Street. In 1851, Kissimmee became a town when it incorporated as a municipality under law passed by Florida Legislature. In 1892, it became a city after passage of a state constitutional amendment granting city privileges similar to those enjoyed by cities in other states within Florida at that time (including Miami). In Kissimmee, Florida, on November 15, 1894 a group of students from the University of Miami organized what would become one of the most famous student protests in United States history. The protest was against the expulsion of two students who had participated in a fight between rival groups oncampus. TheStudents Union (SU) believed that these two students were guilty as charged and decided to appeal to the university's Board of Trustees. The protest quickly grew into a larger demonstration, with protesters numbering in the thousands. At first they were peaceful but soon began throwing stones and bottles at police officers and other demonstrators. By nightfall some 1,500 people had gathered around campus buildings including President Harry Truman's home. On December 2, 1894, after days of violence and growing pressure from faculty members and students alike, President Truman ordered the school to reopen with both boys back in school. This event is considered by many as the beginning of modern American collegiate education.
