By 1825 CE some African slaves had established a community here called "Tallahassee". Due to new US policies prohibiting slavery at that time, these blacks were able to purchase their freedom in 1865 CE and continued farming until 1840 CE when they moved into what is now Coconut Creek which lies adjacent to today's downtownkissimmee

Kissimmee, Florida is a city in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. The population was 61,903 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Palm Beach County after West Palm Beach and it is part of the Fort Pierce–St. Lucie Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Kissimmee" comes from the Seminole word "kinse' (a kind of sweet potato), meaning "place where there are many people." The first permanent settler in Kissimmee was Nicholas Longacre, who arrived on October 28, 1835. He built a cabin on what is now Second Street near present-day US 192. A few weeks later he married his wife Lucy and together they founded a town with about twenty families called Canaveral on November 4, 1835 just off US 192 about two miles northwest of Longacre's original cabin site. They named their new settlement for General James Keesing's brigade that had fought against General Andrew Jackson at New Orleans during the Mexican War (1846-48). Keesing's brigade included John Cushman and Alexander McMurtry from Tampa and George Stephenson from England who had both volunteered to serve as foot soldiers under Major General Winfield Scott Hancock when he led an American army across Mexico into California in February 1847; Stephenson would be awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during this engagement. The town started out as a small cluster of log cabins but soon began to grow into a bustling community with several stores, churches, schools and other businesses. In December 1850 local resident James Sells donated 5 acres (20 hectares) of land between Elegant Drive north and First Street east to form what would become downtown Kissimmee – now known as Plaza de la Luz or Canopy Walk – which became one of America’s most vibrant commercial districts during its early years.
