Since the late 1800s, Kissimmee, Florida has been a major military and aerospace manufacturer. The city's history of manufacturing begins with the construction of Fort Brooke in 1881. The fort was purpose-built to protect against Seminole Indian attacks and served as a military base for many years. In 1933, the United States Air Force moved its headquarters from Miami to Kissimmee and began using Fort Brooke as its main airbase. In 1977, Lockheed Martin founded their largest plant in Southeast Florida at Stonington Army Ammunition Plant. At that time, it was the world's largest airframe assembly plant. In recent years, Kissimmee has become an important center for missile production due to its location near two NATO bases and its proximity to Boeing's North American Aerospace Defense Center (NORAD). Kissimmee is home to several major military museums including: The US Military History Museum is located onsite at Fort Brooke National Monument and contains over 100,000 items from both American and international militaries dating back to 1775. It also houses rare artifacts such as World War II Japanese aircraft or Vietnam War tanks. Kissimmee, Florida is a small town located in the Miami-Dade County area of South Florida. The population was estimated to be over 100,000 at the time of the 2010 census. It is known for its beaches and amusement park, Kissimmee Springs Resort & Spa. The city began as a small village on the banks of the Kissimmee River in 1892. In 1925, it was renamed for Dr. J.B. Jameson after he donated land for a citrus industry complex that would later become Kissimmee Springs Resort & Spa. The resort became an international tourist destination with its own zip code and name recognition dating back to the 1930s when it was one of only two golf courses in Miami-Dade County open to visitors during World War II. From 1948 until 1990, Kissimmee was home to both Major League Baseball's Miami Marlins (now called the St Louis Cardinals) and American Hockey League's Orlando Predators (now called the Tampa Bay Lightning). In recent years, Kissimmee has seen an influx of retirees from throughout south central Florida who have moved into its homespun communities clustered around lakeshores like Dunedin and Lake Worth. Downtown retains much of its character from when downtown had more than 500 businesses and saw regular live music concerts by such acts as Harry Chapin, Little Richard and Fleetwood Mac; however many residents now work outside their homes or commute into larger municipalities like Coral Gables or Weston Beach which are less than 10 minutes away by public transportation or carpooling services while still having access to all that downtown has to offer including shopping malls, restaurants and nightlife options

The Kissimmee, Florida area has been inhabited by humans for at least 10,000 years. The first recorded references to Kissimmee date back to the 1500s when traders called it Kiskiimahequa. In 1821, a group of Seminole Indians led by Chief Osceola burned down the town of Stonington in present-day central Florida after escaping from Indian captivity. In 1829, Kissimmee was founded as a small trading post on the Miami River by Colonel John C. Parke and his brother-in-law, James Wilkinson. The community grew rapidly due to its location on the river and access to goods brought overland by canoes and horses. By 1830, Kissimmee had a population of 100 people and was considered one of the most important trading posts on the river. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), Kissimmee became an important arsenal for Confederate forces in Southwest Florida because it possessed several cannon and artillery pieces. After Union forces captured Gainesville in 1865, they destroyed many of these cannons at Kissimmee Arsenal before moving them northward into Georgia where they were used against Union troops during that conflict. Kissimmee experienced significant growth during Reconstruction following the war; in 1876, it became a city with a population of 2,500 people. However, economic stagnation followed until World War II when much of what is now downtownkissimmee was developed as part of military housing projects built during that time period. During World War II, large numbers of Japanese Americans were interned here because they were enemy aliens living in violation of United States law. After the war ended, many Japanese Americans returned to their homes but some continued to live in downtownkissimmee until their deaths in the late 1980s or early 1990s due to health problems caused by long exposure to lead and other pollutants from demolished buildings and businesses near downtown kissime
The Kissimmee River ran through the town until it was diverted to the west by a dam in 1933. The town was renamed Kissimmee after Major General John C. Wilkinson, who had helped create and operate the dam. The river still runs through the town today and is known for its wide variety of waterfowl and fishing opportunities.
