The Naval Station Kissimmee, Florida has been a part of the U.S. Navy for over eighty years and has played an important role in American naval history. The station is home to the United States Submarine Force Fleet Activities Command and its associated commands responsible for nuclear submarines, surface ships, aircraft carriers and other naval units. On 4 October 1962 President John F Kennedy addressed a crowd of Sailors gathered at Naval Station Kissimmee when he announced plans for Operation Neptune's Spear - an attack against Cuba that failed due to Cuban missile deployment interception by Fidel Castro's Cuban military forces days beforeKennedy would be assassinated two months later in Dallas Texas

Kissimmee, Florida is a small town located in Polk County, Florida. The population was 9,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford metropolitan area. Kissimmee is located on the Apalachicola River and was founded by pioneers in 1851 as a trading post. The town's name comes from an Indian word meaning "place of refreshment." In 1907, Kissimmee became one of two towns in Polk County to be incorporated as a city. Today it is known for its stylish shopping districts and its many cultural attractions, including the Disney Animation Studios and Universal Studios Hollywood. The first settlers in Kissimmee were white men from Georgia who arrived during the Seminole Wars in 1836. They built log cabins along the river and began fishing for salmon and catfish. By 1840, they had started to grow cotton plantations which provided jobs for their families until after World War II when automation made it possible for people to work outside the home. In 1942, Japanese Americans were rounded up and interned during World War II based on their race; many chose to stay behind because they believed that they would not be taken away like other citizens of America. After the war, many Japanese Americans returned to their homes in California but some choose to live permanently in Florida because there were no chances of being discriminated against again following American victory over Japan—a sentiment that persists today among some Japanese-Americans living in Orlando or Miami Beach). After liberation from Japan following World War II, Koreans also decided to move into Kissimmee due to high unemployment rates throughout South Korea after years of military dictatorship under General MacArthur's rule (the Koreas officially regained independence from Japan on September 25th, 1948). Kissimmee is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 21,711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Orlando– Kissimmee–Bayfront Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Kissimmee" comes from the Seminole word "kisin", meaning to play or frolic. The area now known as Kissimmee was first settled by white settlers in 1835 and 1830s. A post office called "Kissimmee" was established in 1836, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1849, Jethro Gibbs built a mill on Cypress Creek near present-day Kissimmee Boulevard and Mills Drive. At that time, Kissimmee consisted of only scattered Indian hunting camps and small settlements along Cypress Creek and its sister creeklets Gumbochilla Creek and Okeechobee Creek. By 1860, however, sizable areas had been developed around the mills; many homes were built between Prairie Avenue east of State Road 17 (now US 1) and what is now downtown Kissimmee. In 1870, a railroad station opened atpresent-daykissimaedowntownandthecityranonitforseveralyearsbeforebeingdemolishedin1892bya groupofinvestors led byHugh LaddsonthefounderoftheMiamiTelephoneCompany. The Kissimmee Massacre took place on September 14, 1892, when white settlers in what is now Polk County killed five black Seminole Indians during a robbery. The massacre was the deadliest event in Florida history and remains the worst U.S. Indian massacre.
