At first only men were allowed to vote; but women voted in 1904 when they became citizens through Amendment 1. The present day Mayor is Carlos Gimenez with City Council members being elected at-large with staggered terms beginning February 4th each year and ending November 3rd following the mayoral election held on that date (the term length is four years). Kissimmee's nickname is "The Cotton Plantation Capital of America" because so much cotton was grown here until the early 20th century that it spawned two entire towns within its borders: Port Orange and Miramar Beach which are still considered part of Kissimmee today despite having different names – one due to annexation by Orlando during World War II whileMiramar Beach remains unincorporated and uninhabited). Kissimmee, Florida is a town in Duval County, Florida. As of the 2010 census, the population was 382. The name "Kissimmee" was derived from the Seminole word "kiksi". The first post office in Kissimmee was established on November 5, 1903. The town originally consisted of a few homes and a small store. In 1907, it became one of two towns in Duval County to be incorporated. In 1912, Kissimmee became known as the site for the world's first air-conditioned stadium when it hosted the groundbreaking for Miami–Dade County Stadium. It also served as home to both the Miami Marlins baseball team and American Football League's Miami Dolphins from 1959 until 2002 when they moved to ESPN Park in nearby West Palm Beach. In 1977, Kissimmee voters passed an ordinance that banned smoking cigarettes within 500 feet of any public building or park. This ordinance remains in effect today and is considered one of Kissimmee's most famous accomplishments. After years of lobbying by local cigar dealers and ministers who believed that such a ban would help reduce smoking rates among its citizens, the city council finally passed an ordinance banning smoking indoors on December 12th, 1986 after much debate and protest from smokers inside businesses and on streets near parks/buildings where nonsmokers were also present

The town is located in the unincorporated area of Polk County about 20 miles southwest of Orlando. While living in Tupelo, Mississippi during the early 1950s, Gladys met Vernon Jackson and they married there on December 16, 1951. On July 4, 1956, Elvis became an American citizen.
