Kissimmee, Florida is a small town located in county of Osceola, Florida. The population was 3,813 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Kissimmee-Hollywood-Pompano Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. Kissimmee was founded on September 25, 1868 as a post office by J.B. Slocum and Wm. Hickey with the name of "Mallory's Landing." It was renamed to its current name on November 4, 1914 after Lillian Gwynne Lester who donated land for a park in that area. The town has experienced many boom and bust times over its history but has always been an important agricultural center due to its fertile soil and large citrus crops. The area that now makes up Kissimmee was part of Indian Creek Township until 1836 when it was annexed by St. Petersburg. At its incorporation, Kissimmee boasted a population of only 100 people and was considered an agricultural small town with few businesses other than groceries and feed stores. The name "Kissimmee" derived from two Seminole words meaning "to visit." One word means "the sweet place" while another means "a shelter from rain or heat." Kissimmee is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Boca Raton metropolitan area. The first permanent settlers in what is now Kissimmee were three men from Georgia who named their new town after themselves – John Covington, James Ketchum and Nicholas Culver. They arrived on November 8, 1837, during the Seminole Wars. A post office called "Culverville" was established in 1838, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1845. In 1839, J.D. Payne built a sawmill on Cypress Creek near present-day Gainesville Boulevard and State Road 612 (now US Highway 441). This mill became known as Payne's Mill because James Dolan bought the mill from Payne in 1847. In 1850, Jardine & Co., merchants and investors founded EagleBank of Florida with $5000 of capital; it became one of the largest banks west of the Allegheny Mountains by 1860. On December 22nd, 1861, Kissimmee became an incorporated village when residents of nearby Winter Park petitioned for incorporation; however Winter Park did not become an incorporated village until 1906 when it amalgamated with Kissimmee to form Orlando Township (later Orange County). The name "Kissimmee" originated from a Indian word meaning "place where two rivers join." A post office called "Kissimee" was established at this location on May 10th 1890; it continued to be operational until 1907 (). On January 15th 1911 a fire destroyed most of downtown Kissimmee while sparing many businesses along State Road 612 which still stand today including Pritchett's Barber Shop (), Wrigley's Pizza (), Bankers Trust & Co.'s National Bank building (), First American bank () and Evelyn's Dry Goods store (). The only structure that survived that date was Roper’s General Store which reopened two weeks later with new windows thanks to donations by local citizens (). In 1912 Flora Stone located her home at 401 S Main Street which would become her business center for years to come. In 1916 she donated land south of State Road 612 east of Business Loop I-4 for what would become Park Place Mall (); it opened its doors on July 17th 1928. By 1937 there were over 50 businesses operating within 1 block radius of Central Avenue. In 1957 Enterprise Rent-A-Car began operations at International Drive & Professional Avenue. In 1966 Hollywood Casino Resort decided to close all its gaming machines following allegations that they had been misused by organized crime figures such as Miami Vice ',^[1]
